Chapter 13

Inside the cavernous master bedroom on the second floor of Oakridge Manor, the atmosphere was thick with tension. The crime scene investigators had systematically dismantled the room, searching every nook and cranny for hidden compartments. Behind a massive, floor-to-ceiling oil painting of the estate's founder, they discovered a heavy steel wall safe embedded deep into the brickwork.
Margaret sat in a velvet armchair nearby, her hands trembling slightly despite her best efforts to maintain her composure. Her blonde updo was beginning to come undone, loose strands framing her pale, hollow cheeks. She watched helplessly as a safe-cracking specialist manipulated the electronic dial under the direction of the lead detective.
With a deep, metallic thud, the heavy steel door of the safe swung open.
The investigator shone a high-powered flashlight into the dark recess of the safe. Inside lay stacks of banded cash, foreign bank account documents, passports under various aliases, and a small, secure digital hard drive. But what caught the detective's immediate attention was a second manila folder, identical to the one found in the study, marked with Catherine’s name.
The detective pulled the folder out and opened it on the nearby vanity table. Inside were not police reports, but personal letters, signed confessions, and detailed financial ledgers proving that Margaret had orchestrated the illegal embezzlement schemes that Catherine had threatened to expose. Furthermore, a handwritten medical memorandum signed by a compromised family physician detailed the exact sedative used to incapacitate Catherine before her fatal fall down the stairs.
The detective walked over to Margaret, holding the open folder before her eyes. “Care to explain this, Mrs. Oakridge? It appears you had a much more direct hand in Catherine’s death than your son did.”
Margaret stared at the damning evidence, her breath catching in her throat. The ironclad denial she had rehearsed for decades finally disintegrated. The weight of her own cruelty, greed, and arrogance crushed down upon her. She realized that every contingency plan she had laid had failed, outsmarted by a young woman she had underestimated from the very beginning.
“She was going to ruin everything,” Margaret whispered hoarsely, her voice cracking for the first time, echoing the bitter resignation of a tyrant defeated. “We built this family legacy from nothing. Catherine was a weak link. She had to be removed.”

“And Elena was supposed to be the next victim to cover your tracks,” the detective stated firmly, signaling to the waiting deputies.
Margaret slumped back into the armchair, offering no further resistance as the steel handcuffs were fastened around her wrists. The dark reign of Oakridge Manor had finally come to an end, dismantled piece by piece by the truth.
