Chapter 3: The Secret in the Green Folder

The heavy oak door of the study remained slightly ajar, casting a warm sliver of light across the dark hallway. Martha sat frozen at the wooden table, the scattered photographs of kissing couples pushed hastily to the side to make room for the trembling hands holding her teacup. Clara slipped quietly into the room, closing the door behind her with a soft click that barely disturbed the dust motes dancing in the sunbeams. Martha looked up, her gray hair framing a face etched with deep worry, wearing her usual beige cardigan that always smelled faintly of lavender and old paper. Clara, darling, Martha whispered, her voice cracking. We are in grave danger. Eleanor is not who she pretends to be, and neither is the foundation this house was built upon. Clara knelt beside her grandmother’s chair, taking the frail, wrinkled hands into her own. I know, Grandma, Clara replied softly, her voice steady despite the chaos churning inside her. I saw David in the kitchen with a green folder. They are hiding something massive, and I think it has something to do with those photographs. Martha nodded slowly, her eyes reflecting a mixture of fear and fierce determination. That folder contains financial records from twenty years ago, back when your grandfather passed away. Eleanor took control of the estate, but she did not inherit it legally. She manipulated the documents, forged signatures, and pushed your parents out before they could uncover the truth. A cold shiver ran down Clara’s spine. Her parents had died in a tragic accident when she was just a small child—or at least, that was the story Eleanor had repeated like gospel every single day of her life. What if the accident wasn't an accident at all? What if Eleanor’s greed extended further than psychological torment? Martha squeezed Clara’s fingers, leaning in close. David knows the truth now. He found the missing deeds and the correspondence between Eleanor and the crooked lawyer who helped her orchestrate the theft. He wants to hand them over to the authorities, but Eleanor is threatening to cut him off entirely from the family trust. We have to get our hands on that green folder before Eleanor destroys it, Martha urged. Clara looked toward the door, her hesitation vanishing. For her birthday, she didn't want cake or presents. She wanted her freedom, and she was willing to risk everything to claim it.
