Chapter 3 - The Ambulance Lights “Where is that damn ambulance? They should be here!”

“They’re turning the corner now, Adrian, I see the lights.”
“Leo, stay with us, please baby, open your eyes.”
“He’s burning up, Helen. We need to cool him down fast.”
“Use my jacket! Pour some of that bottled water on it!”
“Move aside, let the paramedics through right now!”

The wail of the approaching siren cut through the humid afternoon air, offering a desperately needed lifeline to the silent courtyard. Two emergency medical technicians spilled out of the back of the white van before it had even come to a complete stop, their heavy equipment clattering against the pavement. One carried a bright orange trauma bag while the other sprinted forward with a portable oxygen kit and a chilled saline pack. Adrian instinctively stepped back to give them working room, his blood-stained hands trembling violently at his sides as the reality of his criminal carelessness threatened to pull him under. Helen knelt on the asphalt beside the open door, cradling the unresponsive infant while the lead paramedic gently placed a pediatric oxygen mask over Leo’s face. The cool mist hissed softly, a stark contrast to the heavy, suffocating silence that had gripped the family moments before. The medic checked the baby’s pulse at his tiny wrist, his professional expression tightening into a grim line that sent a fresh wave of terror through Adrian’s chest. Without a word, they lifted the infant onto a specialized gurney, strapping him in securely before wheeling him toward the back of the ambulance. Helen climbed inside immediately, her white blazer stained with sweat and blood, her eyes locked entirely on her son’s pale face. Adrian moved to follow, but a heavy hand landed firmly on his shoulder, halting his advance. It was Officer Miller, a local beat cop who had arrived on a routine patrol just as the chaos erupted. The officer’s expression was devoid of warmth, carrying the heavy weight of mandatory protocol and suspicion. Adrian looked from the closing ambulance doors to the stern face of the lawman, realizing that the physical rescue was only the beginning of a much darker nightmare.
