Chapter 11 - The Stabilized Pulse “We have a heartbeat back. Rate is stabilizing at one-twenty.”

*Thank God. Is he breathing on his own yet, Doctor?”
“Not quite, Mrs. Vance. We’ve kept him sedated for now.”
“Why keep him under? When will he wake up safely?”
“His brain needs absolute rest to recover from the thermal shock.”
“Just tell me he’s going to make a full recovery, please.”

The frantic flurry of activity inside the incubator gradually subsided into a tense, controlled calm as the heart monitor settled back into a steady, rhythmic beep. The lead physician wiped a layer of sweat from his forehead with the back of his forearm, offering Helen a tired, reassuring smile before stepping out of the partitioned space to speak with them directly. Helen scrambled up from the floor, leaning heavily against Adrian for physical support as they listened to the medical update. The immediate crisis had passed, but the long-term prognosis remained shrouded in uncertainty, a gray cloud hanging over their family that no amount of money could blow away. Adrian let out a long, shuddering breath, feeling the burning tension in his shoulders ease just a fraction, though the guilt in his chest remained as heavy as lead. He looked down at Helen, noticing for the first time how fragile she looked beneath her professional exterior, stripped of the polished armor she usually wore to social events. In the face of near-tragedy, their bitter estrangement felt suddenly petty and insignificant compared to the shared agony of watching their only child hover on the brink of death. Adrian reached out and gently wiped a stray tear from her cheek with his bandaged thumb, a gesture so tender and familiar that Helen momentarily leaned into his touch before pulling back with a conflicted expression. The temporary truce was interrupted by the heavy click of the unit's main doors opening to admit two figures in dark suits who definitely weren't doctors or nurses.
