Chapter 9

The blinding wash of white and red light filled the hallway instantly, washing away the protective cover of darkness. Chloe shielded her eyes with her forearm, blinking hard against the sudden glare. Standing at the front entry was not Officer Miller or Officer Vance, but three entirely unfamiliar men in tactical gear, their heavy plate carriers emblazoned with federal task force insignia.

At the front of the unit stood a stern-faced woman with iron-gray hair cropped short, her badge gleaming sharply under the porch light. She swept her tactical shotgun across the corridor with practiced precision before her eyes locked onto Thomas standing by the master bedroom threshold.

"Drop your hands, Thomas! Do it now!" the federal agent barked, her voice cutting through the space like a razor.

Thomas didn't flinch. Instead, a cold, resigned smile touched the corners of his weathered mouth. He slowly raised his hands, his fingers splayed wide, keeping his eyes fixed not on the federal agent, but on the shadowy doorway behind her where Officer Miller had just reappeared, gun drawn and breathing heavily.

"You're a little late to the scene, Agent Vance," Thomas called out calmly, his voice echoing off the walls. "The evidence was already compromised the second your sister stepped foot inside this house twenty minutes ago."

Agent Vance’s eyes darted sharply toward Miller, who stood rigidly by the front door, her service weapon still raised but trembling slightly in her grip. The tension in the hallway became so thick it felt like solid glass, ready to shatter at the slightest vibration.

"Miller," Agent Vance said, her voice dropping into a deadly, official register. "Lower your weapon. Step away from the door."

Miller didn't move. She kept her eyes locked on Agent Vance, a bead of sweat trickling down the side of her temple. The silence between the two women carried twenty years of shared secrets, corruption, and an unspoken pact that was now unraveling under the harsh light of federal scrutiny.

"Don't do it, Director," Miller warned quietly, her voice taut with desperation. "If you open that safe and play that tape, half the municipal government goes down with this house. You're not just burning a precinct; you're blowing up the entire county infrastructure."

Chloe stood frozen between Mark and the wall, her mind spinning as the horrifying truth settled over her. The federal agent standing at her front door wasn't here to rescue her or investigate an assault; she was here to finish the cover-up that started two decades ago.

"Agent Vance..." Chloe whispered, stepping out from the shadows. "She killed my father."
