Chapter 1

The rhythmic pulse of red and blue cruiser lights sliced through the vertical blinds, painting the narrow suburban hallway in bleeding shades of crimson and cobalt. Chloe stood frozen against the floral wallpaper, her knuckles turning bone-white as she tightened her grip on the heavy wooden baseball bat. Her breath came in shallow, shaky gasps that fogged the cool interior air. Just a few feet away, Officer Miller—a seasoned blonde female cop with her hair pulled into a tight, no-nonsense bun—stood between Chloe and the bruised, handcuffed figure of Clara, Chloe’s aging mother.
Officer Vance, the male patrolman, gripped Clara’s forearm with practiced neutrality, holding the elder woman steady against the peeling paint of the corridor wall. The atmosphere hummed with a volatile, brittle energy, every participant acutely aware that a single wrong word could detonate the fragile situation. Chloe’s chest rose and fell sharply as she stared at the gleaming silver bracelets digging into her mother’s frail, blue-cardigan-clad wrists. The raw injustice of the sight clawed at her throat, demanding immediate justification from the indifferent uniform standing in her way.
"Why is my mother in cuffs?" Chloe demanded, her voice cracking with a mixture of adrenaline and pure, unadulterated fury. She shifted her weight, the Louisville Slugger resting heavily against her thigh. "She hit me."
Clara twisted in Officer Vance’s grip, her face mottled with dark, angry contusions that starkly contrasted with her soft silver hair. Her eyes flashed with defiance rather than fear.
"And they believed her," Clara snapped, her voice trembling with an aged, acidic venom. "She came at me first! I was protecting myself."
Officer Miller stepped closer, her boots clicking sharply against the hardwood floor. She cast a cold, assessing gaze over Clara’s swollen cheekbone before turning her attention back to Chloe.
"Did anyone photograph her injuries?" Officer Miller asked, her tone dropping into a dangerous, calculated register. "This is a domestic dispute, don’t make it bigger than it is."
Chloe blinked, momentarily thrown off balance by the officer's shift in focus. "What does that matter? Look at what she did to my face!"
Mark, standing quietly in the shadows just behind Chloe, shifted uncomfortably in his pressed button-down shirt. He reached out, gently placing a warm palm on Chloe’s rigid shoulder, trying to anchor her erratic energy.
"Officer, we have documentation," Mark offered smoothly, pulling his smartphone from his pocket and tapping the screen.

He tilted the glowing device toward Officer Miller. The screen displayed a harsh, high-resolution photograph of Clara’s bruised face, taken under the glaring fluorescent light of the kitchen just ten minutes prior. Officer Miller stared down at the illuminated display, her eyes narrowing as she studied the precise angles of the discoloration. A heavy silence descended on the hallway, broken only by the distant, muted wail of a siren somewhere out on the main boulevard. The female officer slowly raised her head, locking eyes with Mark with an unsettling intensity.
"Parker," Officer Miller said quietly, her voice dropping to a low, commanding whisper. "Now preserve everything. From this moment on, you’re no longer in the record."
