Chapter 5: The Hospital Corridor

The fluorescent lights of St. Jude Memorial Hospital hummed a sterile, unbroken tune down the long, white-tiled corridor. Julian sat on a molded plastic chair in the waiting alcove, his dark blue suit rumpled and stained with dust and a faint smudge of Clara’s blood. He stared blankly at his own hands, unable to scrub away the phantom sensation of Clara’s terrified grip. The events of the penthouse felt like a fever dream, yet the legal and emotional wreckage was entirely real.

Elena walked down the corridor holding two cardboard cups of black coffee, her green sleeveless dress now covered by a tailored camel-hair coat against the hospital’s aggressive air conditioning. She handed one of the cups to Julian without a word, taking the seat beside him. "The attending physician says the baby’s heartbeat is stable," Elena said softly, breaking the heavy silence. "Clara has a severe concussion and severe bruising along her left flank, but she’s going to retain the pregnancy. Physically, she will recover."

Julian took the coffee cup, wrapping his cold fingers around the cardboard. He didn't drink. "And legally?" he asked, his voice gravelly and worn.

"Helen was arraigned an hour ago," Elena replied, staring straight ahead at the opposite wall. "No bail. The video you shot was admissible as immediate res gestae evidence, and the prosecutor added attempted armed robbery and reckless endangerment of an unborn child to the assault charges. She’s looking at a mandatory prison term. There’s no legal maneuvering that’s going to save her from this."

Julian let out a long, shuddering breath, resting his elbows on his knees and burying his face in his hands. "I should have stopped her the moment she picked up that hammer, Elena. Instead, I stood in the doorway and filmed it. I wanted leverage. I wanted control over the family trust, so I used Clara’s safety as a high-stakes gamble to trap Helen into committing an overt felony."

"Yes, you did," Elena agreed without hesitation, her voice devoid of comfort but rich in stark truth. "You played a very dangerous game with people who trusted you, Julian. Helen wanted the money for herself, but you were willing to watch the house burn just so you could pick through the ashes."

Julian didn't defend himself. He knew she was right. The ambition that had driven him into the Vance family orbit had corrupted every relationship he touched. He looked up at Elena, his eyes dark with remorse. "Can I see her?"

"Not yet," Elena said, standing up as the emergency doors at the end of the hall swung open to reveal a detective in a plainclothes suit holding a manila folder. "And when you do, Julian, you need to be prepared for the fact that she doesn't want your protection anymore. She wants out."
