Chapter 4: Threshold of Accountability

Heavy pounding echoed against the thick oak entry door of the master suite, followed by a sharp, authoritative voice identifying the police department. Elena did not hesitate; she walked swiftly across the marble flooring and unlatched the deadbolt, pulling the heavy door open to reveal two uniformed officers and a paramedic carrying a trauma kit. The harsh reality of the outside world rushed into the luxurious bedroom, banishing the sterile quiet that had previously masked the violence within.

"Step back, everyone, give us room," the lead officer commanded, his eyes scanning the scene with practiced efficiency. He noted Helen standing near the mahogany bench, the heavy hammer lying near the baseboard, and Julian kneeling on the floor cradling the injured, pregnant young woman. "What’s the nature of the injuries here?"

"She was shoved or fell during a physical altercation involving a blunt instrument," Elena stated clearly, pointing toward Helen without trembling. "The older woman, Helen Vance, threatened her to obtain a safe combination. My name is Elena Vance, I’m an attorney and a resident here. The entire incident was digitally recorded on a mobile device held by Julian Hayes."

The paramedic immediately dropped to his knees beside Julian, gently easing Clara’s shoulders back against a sterile pad while checking her pulse and respiration rates. "Ma'am, can you hear me? My name is paramedic Davis. I'm going to check your vitals now." Clara whimpered, her eyes fluttering open with immense effort as she nodded faintly, clutching Julian’s hand as if it were her only anchor to reality.

The second officer moved toward Helen, his hand resting casually near his duty belt. "Ma'am, I’m going to need you to step away from that bench and place your hands where I can see them. We received a direct dispatch regarding an assault with a deadly weapon."

Helen’s face drained of its remaining color, but she raised her hands again with rigid dignity, her gold silk blouse catching the flashing red and blue lights filtering through the window from the street below. "This is a private family dispute regarding corporate assets," Helen said, her voice tight with controlled fury. "My attorney will have this dismissed before morning. My sister-in-law was attempting to misappropriate trust property."

"Asset dispute or not, you don't use a framing hammer to enforce it," the officer replied coldly, clicking the steel cuffs around Helen’s wrists with a sharp, definitive snap.

Julian watched Helen being escorted toward the doorway, feeling a profound sense of hollow exhaustion. He handed his phone—still recording the scene—to the lead officer, unlocking it with his thumbprint. "Here is the raw footage," Julian said quietly. "Every second of it. Use it however you need to."
