Chapter 6: Descent into the Past

The air grew noticeably cooler as Robert and Maya descended the concrete steps into the sub-level tunnels. Robert used the flashlight on his phone to cut through the thick darkness, the beam bouncing off damp cinderblock walls covered in peeling white paint and decades of condensation. Water dripped rhythmically from overhead pipes, creating a hollow, echoing sound that magnified every footstep. The contrast between the sunlit swimming pool above and this subterranean vault felt like stepping into another dimension entirely.
"Keep close to the wall," Robert instructed, his voice low as it echoed off the narrow corridor. "These old blueprints were never updated after the seventy-nine expansion. We’re essentially walking blind."
Maya clutched a secondary flashlight in her hand, her beam sweeping across rows of rusted water mains and thick, bundles of electrical cables that hummed with a low, vibrating frequency. Her mind raced back to her father’s journal, filled with frantic margin notes and hand-drawn schematics of load-bearing columns that seemed to intersect with spaces that officially did not exist.
"My dad always said this building was constructed in a rush to beat municipal zoning laws," Maya murmured, ducking beneath a low-hanging ventilation duct. "He believed cutting corners wasn't just about financial profit; it was about hiding structural failures that occurred during the initial excavation."
Robert paused, shining his light onto a junction box marked with faded stenciling. "Look at this numbering," he said, pointing to a series of stamped digits. "This isn't standard utility coding. This matches the specifications for a private shelter or secure vault, not a standard apartment complex foundation."
Before Maya could respond, a distant metallic clang echoed down the concrete corridor. Both of them froze, extinguishing their flashlights in unison. The absolute darkness was suffocating, pierced only by the faint red glow of a distant emergency exit sign further down the hall. Someone else was down here in the labyrinth.

Holding their breath, they pressed their backs against the cold cinderblock wall. Footsteps, heavy and deliberate, scraped against the concrete floor some fifty yards away, moving methodically from the main junction toward their sector. Maya felt her heart hammering against her ribs, the adrenaline spiking through her veins with dizzying speed. If Clara had followed them down, or worse, if someone from the building management was patrolling these restricted areas, their clandestine investigation was about to blow wide open.
The footsteps slowed, pausing near a side corridor intersection just feet from where Robert and Maya stood concealed in the shadows. A beam of light swept across the opposite wall, illuminating dust motes dancing in the damp air.
