Chapter 13: The Collapse Begins

The emergency generator kicked in seconds later, bathing the room in a dull, pulsing amber light. Robert rushed to the window, pulling back the blinds. Across the courtyard, the lights around the swimming pool flickered and died, leaving the deck in deep shadow. But something else had changed—a low, grinding rumble, like distant thunder beneath the earth, vibrated through the concrete foundation of the building.
"Get out!" Robert shouted, turning back to Maya and Clara. "The vibration from the main electrical shutoff must have triggered a minor shift in the sub-level arches. The pool deck is moving!"
Without hesitation, the three of them bolted out the front door into the breezeway. Around them, dozens of residents were evacuating their units, pouring out onto the open walkways in a state of confused panic. The air was thick with tension, but thanks to Clara’s broadcast, the panic was organized rather than chaotic. People were heading toward the main parking lot exits, away from the central courtyard.
As Maya reached the edge of the breezeway overlooking the pool, she gasped. The concrete deck surrounding the public swimming pool had visibly sagged on the eastern edge, creating a sharp tilt toward the center. The water in the pool was sloshing violently over the coping stones, creating a miniature tidal wave that crashed against the lounge chairs and umbrellas.
"Look!" Clara pointed toward the maintenance shed. Vance was stumbling out of the doorway, coughing and covered in dust, having managed to break through the jammed pneumatic lock from the inside. He looked up at the sagging pool deck, his face turning pale as he realized the full extent of the disaster he had tried to cover up.

"Vance!" Robert yelled, cutting across the emptying courtyard toward the superintendent. "Get away from the edge! The whole structure is coming down!"
Vance turned, stumbling backward as a deep fissure cracked open across the pavement between the maintenance shed and the shallow end of the pool. With a deafening roar of snapping concrete and grinding rebar, a twenty-foot section of the pool deck suddenly collapsed inward, plunging tons of concrete, chairs, and water into the dark subterranean cavern below.
