Chapter 9

Three weeks after the chaotic wedding night that shook the city's financial elite, the autumn leaves had turned a brilliant amber and gold, swirling through the downtown streets outside Elena Vance’s apartment. Elena sat at her reclaimed oak desk, her heavy plaster cast resting comfortably on an extended padded footstool. The sharp pain in her ankle had faded to a dull stiffness, a daily physical reminder of the night her life had pivoted away from disaster.
Her laptop screen glowed brightly, displaying dozens of emails from federal investigators, corporate clients, and old university friends who had heard about the scandal and rushed to offer their support. The corporate firm where she worked had promoted her to Senior Forensic Analyst on an expedited basis, acknowledging that her persistent investigation had saved the firm millions of dollars before Thomas Sterling’s scheme could fully materialize.
A sharp knock at her apartment door broke her concentration. Before she could answer, the door swung open to reveal Julian, carrying two large takeout bags from her favorite Italian restaurant and a bottle of sparkling apple cider.
“Working overtime again, El?” Julian asked, kicking the door shut with his foot and heading straight for the small kitchen island to unpack the containers.
“Someone has to clean up the rest of the Sterling debris,” Elena said with a light chuckle, closing her laptop lid. “Besides, sitting still all day drives me crazy. When does the doctor say this cast comes off?”
“Ten days,” Julian replied, placing a steaming plate of pasta in front of her along with a fork. “And I’ve already cleared my schedule to drive you to the clinic. No arguments.”
Elena smiled, deeply grateful for the unbreakable bond she shared with her brother. The crisis had tested their relationship, but it had ultimately forged an indestructible trust. They ate in companionable silence for a few minutes, enjoying the simple comfort of home—a stark contrast to the artificial luxury of the Grandview Ballroom.
“Have you heard anything about Chloe?” Elena asked quietly, twirling a forkful of spaghetti.
May you like
Julian paused, his expression turning thoughtful. “She’s keeping a very low profile. She moved out of the city temporarily, staying at her family’s estate in the mountains. From what Arthur hears, she’s taking a long-overdue break from high-society galas to rethink her life choices. No more fake romances, no more superficial social climbing.”
Elena nodded slowly. She felt a twinge of sympathy for the former bride. Despite Chloe’s initial cruelty and self-absorbed denial on the night of the incident, she too had been a victim of Thomas Sterling’s sociopathic manipulation. True recovery took time for everyone involved.
