Chapter 7

Chloe Sterling stood motionless amidst the unfolding wreckage of her wedding day. The shimmering white embroidered gown that had cost more than most people earned in a year now felt like a suffocating shroud. She looked down at her sparkly sweetheart bodice, realizing with sickening clarity that every sweet word Thomas had ever spoken to her was part of a calculated deception designed to secure her father’s political influence and financial backing. She wasn't a cherished bride; she was a strategic human shield.
As Detective Ortiz motioned for another officer to cuff Thomas, the groom caught Chloe's eye. There was no apology in his gaze, no remorse, only a cold, transactional irritation that she had failed to manage her own family members effectively.
“Chloe,” Thomas said smoothly, testing her loyalty one last time. “Tell them this is a family dispute. Tell them you authorized the layout changes.”
Chloe stared at him, her chest rising and falling rapidly. The narcissistic spell was finally broken, replaced by a cold, searing wrath that eclipsed even her earlier annoyance at Elena. She took two deliberate steps forward, her high heels clicking sharply against the marble floor.
“I authorized a wedding, Thomas,” Chloe said, her voice eerily calm and devoid of tears. “I did not authorize grand larceny, assault, or making a complete fool of my family in front of the entire city.” She turned her gaze to Detective Ortiz. “Officer, check the private safe in his study at the penthouse. He keeps the secondary hard drives behind the portrait of his grandfather. Everything my father invested is in there.”
Thomas’s jaw dropped. The color completely drained from his face as he realized his own vanity and underestimation of his bride had just signed his legal death warrant. “You ungrateful—,” he started, before Detective Ortiz clamped a heavy steel cuff around his wrist and yanked him upright.
“That’s enough, counselor,” the detective said dryly. “You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”
As the officers escorted Thomas out of the ballroom past the flashing red lights, the silence returned, heavier and more profound than before. Marcus Thorne stepped over to Chloe, offering a handkerchief with surprising gentleness.

“You handled that well, Mrs. Sterling,” Marcus said quietly.
Chloe didn't take the handkerchief. She simply looked down at her hands, the illusion of perfection shattered forever, leaving her to face the difficult task of rebuilding her life from the ashes of a lie.
