Chapter 2 - The Recorder Beneath The Seat

The wail of distant sirens grew louder, cutting through the heavy suburban silence like a knife. Adrian knelt on the asphalt, cradling Lily’s unresponsive body while Clara frantically relayed their address to the 911 dispatcher.

"They're three minutes out, Adrian. Keep her cool," Clara said, dropping to her knees and pressing a wet cloth against the little girl's flushed forehead.

"She's too still, Clara. Look at her lips," Adrian whispered, his tough exterior completely dissolving into a puddle of absolute helplessness.

His hand brushed against the black plastic floor mat, where the strange blinking recorder lay partially hidden beneath a discarded juice box. Without thinking, Adrian scooped it up and slid it into his back pocket just as the flashing red and blue lights of the ambulance illuminated the driveway. Paramedics spilled out of the vehicle with heavy medical kits, pushing Adrian and Clara aside with practiced urgency.

"Move back, let us work," a paramedic commanded, hoisting Lily onto a stretcher and strapping an oxygen mask over her face.

Clara clutched Adrian's torn sleeve, sobbing openly now as they watched their only child get loaded into the back of the ambulance.

"Get in your car and follow us," the lead paramedic barked before slamming the doors shut.

Adrian stood frozen, the metal edge of the hidden recorder pressing hard against his spine. He hadn't told Clara about it. In fact, he had no idea how it got there, or why the little LED light had just flickered green when he touched it.

"Adrian, move! Let's go!" Clara yelled from the driver's seat of her sedan, her face streaked with mascara and tears.

Adrian hurried to the passenger side and got in, slamming the door shut as they peeled out of the driveway behind the ambulance. As Clara navigated the chaotic traffic, Adrian reached into his pocket, pulled out the device, and pressed play on the tiny digital screen. A low-pitched, distorted voice filled his headphones, whispering his own name.
