Chapter 15 - The Ground We Stand On

The heavy steel door of the cockpit sealed shut with a definitive click, locking Sterling inside the flight deck as the automated emergency klaxons began to wail throughout the cabin. Adrian didn't wait. He grabbed the emergency override lever near the floor, pulling it with all his remaining strength just as the aircraft’s autopilot kicked in to stabilize the cabin pressure.
The howling wind died down to a dull whistle as the emergency seal re-engaged, restoring oxygen to the cabin. Clara collapsed against Adrian’s chest, sobbing tears of pure relief as they held each other tightly amidst the scattered debris. Little Lily stirred in her blanket nearby, letting out a soft, sleepy yawn completely oblivious to the chaos that had just unfolded around her.
Twenty minutes later, the Gulfstream's landing gear deployed with a heavy thud, touching down smoothly on the tarmac of a major federal airfield surrounded by a dozen flashing police cruisers and black-and-white FBI vehicles.
As the jet taxied to a halt and lowered its boarding stairs once again, federal agents swarmed the aircraft with weapons drawn. Sterling was escorted out of the cockpit in handcuffs, his expensive suit rumpled and his expression entirely defeated as the bright camera flashes of the press corps illuminated the night sky.
Detective Vance was carried out on a stretcher, unconscious and bleeding from a nasty gash on the back of his head, straight into a waiting ambulance.
Adrian and Clara walked down the boarding stairs hand in hand, carrying Lily between them into the cool morning air. A tall federal prosecutor met them at the bottom of the steps, holding out a manila folder and offering a respectful nod.

"Mr. Miller, Mrs. Miller," the prosecutor said quietly. "Your testimony and the data on that recorder are more than enough. Sterling's corporate empire is finished, and your names have been officially cleared of all charges."
Adrian looked down at his torn hands, then over at Clara and their sleeping daughter. The black SUV back in their driveway was still sitting with its shattered window, a stark reminder of the nightmare they had narrowly survived. But as the morning sun broke over the horizon, casting a warm golden light across the tarmac, Adrian knew the shadows had finally been left behind for good.
