Chapter 10: Echoes of the Past

The quiet equilibrium that had settled over North Star was abruptly tested on a rainy Tuesday morning. Arthur was reviewing the newly revised vendor compliance protocols in his office when the interoffice comms chimed sharply. It was the executive receptionist, her voice tight with professional urgency.

"Mr. Vance, there is someone in the lobby insisting on seeing you. He claims he’s an old business associate from your days at Apex Logistics, and he’s refusing to leave until he speaks with someone in senior management."

Arthur frowned, stepping away from his desk. Before he could respond, the heavy glass door of his office swung open without warning. A tall, sharply dressed man with slicked-back blonde hair and an expensive, ill-fitting Armani suit stepped across the threshold. It was Julian Cross, the former vice president of sales at Apex Electronics—the very supplier whose substandard welding sensors had triggered Marcus Sterling’s downfall and subsequent federal investigation.

"Arthur, my man!" Julian boomed, flashing an overly wide, predatory smile that failed to reach his cold, calculating eyes. He stepped further into the office, extending a hand that Arthur made no move to shake. "I hear congratulations are in order. Rising from the ashes of the old regime straight into the operational core of North Star. Impressive pivot."

Arthur stood his ground behind the desk, his posture rigid, his face a mask of cold professional restraint. "What are you doing here, Julian? Apex has no active contracts with North Star, and all communications are currently routed through federal investigators."

Julian chuckled, dropping his outstretched hand and casually sliding into one of the leather chairs opposite the desk without an invitation. "Let's dispense with the federal compliance theater, Arthur. We both know how the game is played. Margins get tight, corners get trimmed, and everyone looks the other way until some junior auditor gets religion." Julian leaned forward, his voice dropping into a conspiratorial whisper. "Marcus Sterling was an amateur. He panicked under pressure. But you and I? We understand how to protect our interests."

"Our interests?" Arthur repeated, his voice dangerously low.

"Let's not play games," Julian said, his smile sharpening into something predatory. "Apex still has substantial inventory earmarked for North Star’s subsidiary plants in the Midwest. If your new chairwoman—your ex-wife, if the corporate gossip mill is accurate—decides to blackball us permanently, it’s going to trigger a chain reaction of litigation that will drag your name right down into the mud alongside Marcus." Julian paused, letting the implicit threat hang heavy in the air. "All I need is for you to sign off on a routine inventory reconciliation form verifying that our previous shipments met structural standards. Quietly. Before the federal audit concludes."

The silence in the office was deafening. Arthur stared at the man sitting across from him, recognizing in Julian the exact reflection of the person he himself had been three years ago—arrogant, transactional, believing that integrity was merely a negotiable commodity to be traded for short-term gain.

"Let me make something crystal clear, Julian," Arthur said, his voice steady, carrying an absolute, unshakeable authority that caught the visitor entirely off guard. "The only thing I am going to sign regarding Apex Electronics is the formal recommendation for permanent asset seizure and criminal fraud prosecution."

Julian’s predatory smile vanished instantly, replaced by a dark, ugly flash of panic and rage. He pushed himself out of the chair, slamming his palms flat onto Arthur’s desk. "You arrogant little bastard! You think you can play the saint now? Everyone in this industry knows about your corporate skeletons. I have the wire transfer records from your previous firm showing how you massaged the Q2 acquisition numbers to secure your promotion!"

"Then take them to the federal investigators," Arthur replied without flinching an inch, locking his gaze onto Julian’s furious eyes. "Because the moment you walk out that door, security will be waiting to escort you off the property. And unlike Marcus, you won't even make it to the lobby before the marshals pick you up."
