Chapter 1: The Glass Doorway

The air inside the corporate boardroom hung thick with the hum of climate control and the faint, rhythmic vibration of heavy machinery rising from the massive factory floor below. Glass walls offered a panoramic view of robotic arms welding chassis components in precise, sparks-flying arcs. At the polished mahogany conference table, legal documents and blue folders lay scattered between empty coffee cups. Arthur Vance stood near the center of the room, his dark suit impeccably tailored, his burgundy tie adjusted with practiced precision. He was mid-sentence, outlining a quarterly acquisition strategy to a dozen senior executives, when the heavy glass door at the end of the room swung open with a muted click.
Olivia Parker stepped across the threshold. She wore a dark, structured suit jacket over a crisp white blouse, her dark hair falling in a straight, immaculate line just past her shoulders. Her movements were entirely unhurried, grounded in a quiet confidence that instantly drew every eye in the room. Arthur froze mid-gesture. The words died in his throat. He turned fully around, his posture stiffening as disbelief flickered across his face. He stared at her, his eyes widening in sudden, profound shock, before pushing himself up from his ergonomic leather chair. The silence in the room deepened, broken only by the muffled industrial heartbeat of the factory outside.
"Olivia? What are you doing here?" Arthur’s voice cracked slightly, betraying an uncharacteristic vulnerability that he quickly tried to mask behind a tightening jaw.
Olivia did not flinch. She maintained a steady, measured pace, walking the length of the room until she reached the vacant seat directly opposite Arthur's usual place. She held a single leather folder in her hand, her expression completely neutral, masking whatever emotional turbulence might lie beneath. With deliberate care, she placed the folder flat against the mahogany surface and slid into the chair, her posture straight and composed.
"I work here," she said. Her voice was calm, pitched at a level that easily carried across the tense space.
Across the table, Marcus Sterling, a senior board member who had remained silent during Arthur’s presentation, shifted in his seat. He looked between Arthur’s pale, sweat-beaded forehead and Olivia’s serene expression. He cleared his throat, raised a hand slightly, and pointed a finger toward Olivia, addressing Arthur directly to break the suffocating tension.

"Olivia Parker, owner and chair of North—" Marcus began, before Arthur slammed his hands flat onto the polished table, leaning his weight forward. Arthur’s face flushed a deep crimson, his eyes wide and burning with a mixture of betrayal, humiliation, and raw disbelief. He locked his gaze onto her, his voice trembling with a terrifying realization.
"You own North Star? You had this when we were married? Then how much of it do you—" Arthur choked on the remainder of his sentence, staring at the woman he thought he knew completely.
