Chapter 9: The Morning of the Board Hearing

The morning air was crisp and damp, carrying the unmistakable scent of early spring rain as it misted against the tall glass windows of the Oakridge High administrative annex. Inside the large conference room, twenty polished leather chairs surrounded an oversized walnut table where the five members of the local school board sat in quiet, serious contemplation. At the head of the table sat Superintendent Miller, a woman known for her strict adherence to ethical standards and zero tolerance for institutional corruption.

Leo sat near the back of the room next to Maya, who had volunteered to attend as a student witness and character reference. Leo’s aluminum crutches were propped securely against his chair, and his dark winter jacket remained zipped against the chill of the air-conditioned room. His leg throbbed slightly from the damp weather, but his focus remained absolute. He held a thin manila folder containing the original source code printouts and submission verification receipts for his municipal traffic optimization project.

Ten minutes later, the side door opened, and Marcus walked in, flanked by his father. Marcus looked noticeably different from the swaggering athlete who had shoved Leo in the gymnasium just forty-eight hours earlier. His varsity jacket was gone, replaced by a plain, navy blue button-down shirt that hung loosely on his frame. His shoulders were rounded, his eyes fixed firmly on the patterned carpet as he took his seat across the walnut table from the board members.

Superintendent Miller cleared her throat, the sound echoing clearly off the wood-paneled walls. “We are here today to conduct a formal disciplinary review regarding the events of Thursday afternoon at the spring awards ceremony,” she began, her tone formal, unyielding, and completely devoid of warmth. “Specifically, the allegations of academic theft, physical intimidation, and misconduct involving student Marcus Holloway and student Leo Vance.”

She looked directly down the table at Marcus’s father before shifting her gaze back to Marcus himself. “Mr. Holloway, your legal counsel and your father have submitted a written statement claiming this was a momentary lapse in judgment. However, the foundation board, the administrative staff, and the digital forensic logs present a very different narrative. We have clear evidence of premeditated document falsification and targeted harassment.”

Marcus swallowed hard, opening his mouth to speak, but no words came out. His father placed a heavy, warning hand on his shoulder, signaling him to remain silent. The illusion of athletic immunity had completely dissolved under the harsh fluorescent lights of the board room. Every person in the room knew the stakes, and everyone knew that the days of sweeping misconduct under the rug in exchange for athletic victories were officially over at Oakridge High.
