Chapter 11: The Board’s Verdict and the Reality Check

The school board retired to an adjoining private deliberation room for exactly twenty-two minutes. Inside the main conference room, the silence was thick enough to cut with a knife. Marcus sat motionless in his chair, staring at the grain of the walnut table, while his father remained rigidly upright, tapping his pen against the wooden surface in a slow, nervous rhythm. Maya leaned over to whisper softly to Leo, offering a reassuring nod, but Leo remained quiet, conserving his energy as he waited for the official resolution.
When the heavy oak door finally clicked open and the five board members filed back into the room, Superintendent Miller took her seat at the center of the head table. Her expression was grave, professional, and entirely resolute. She opened a crisp, freshly printed document and adjusted her reading glasses before speaking.
“The board has reviewed all available evidence, digital forensics logs, witness testimonies, and the admissions made during these proceedings,” Superintendent Miller announced, her voice echoing clearly off the walls. “Regarding student Leo Vance: the board unanimously votes to formally ratify his recipient status for the Arthur Pendelton Memorial Fellowship in Applied Computer Science, effective immediately. Furthermore, the district will issue a formal commendation for his contributions to municipal informatics.”
A quiet wave of relief washed over Maya, who smiled broadly and offered Leo a quick, supportive pat on the shoulder. Leo let out a slow, controlled breath, the tension in his shoulders finally easing as the official validation of his months of hard work was set in stone.
“Regarding student Marcus Holloway,” Superintendent Miller continued, her tone dropping an octave as she shifted her gaze across the table. “The board finds you guilty of premeditated academic theft, violation of school property policies, and physical assault on a student with a documented medical disability. Effective immediately, you are suspended from all athletic programs for the remainder of your high school career. Furthermore, you will serve a twenty-day out-of-school suspension, followed by mandatory community service hours working with the district’s digital literacy outreach program.”

Marcus’s father slammed his hand onto the table, half-rising from his chair. “This is completely absurd! You’re ruining his athletic future over a teenage mistake! He has a scholarship offer from the state university on the line!”
“Mr. Holloway,” Superintendent Miller interrupted sharply, her eyes flashing with cold authority. “Your son’s athletic future was compromised the moment he decided to assault an injured classmate and steal another student’s intellectual property. Integrity matters more than a football game at this institution. The board’s decision is final and non-negotiable.”
