Chapter 7: The Verdict

After three days of intense deliberation, the jury returned to the courtroom. The atmosphere was charged with tension. Vanessa stood beside her legal team, her chin raised, still confident that her status would shield her from conviction. Daniel sat in the gallery behind the prosecution table, his hand resting reassuringly on Elena’s chair.

The judge asked the jury foreperson for the verdict. ""On the count of felony assault, we find the defendant guilty. On the count of unlawful restraint, we find the defendant guilty."" A collective gasp echoed through the courtroom. Vanessa’s composure finally shattered; her face turned pale, and her legs buckled slightly before her attorney held her up.

The judge sentenced Vanessa to three years in state custody, alongside mandatory restitution and community service following her release. In his closing remarks, the judge noted: ""Position, wealth, and prestige do not elevate anyone above the law. Cruelty is not a privilege of the rich, and justice is not a luxury reserved for the few.""

As Vanessa was led away in handcuffs, she turned to look at Daniel one last time. There was no rage left in her eyes—only a hollow, terrified confusion. Daniel watched her go, feeling no sense of triumph, only a heavy sorrow for a woman who had traded her humanity for an illusion of power.
