Chapter 1: The Mask Falls

The phone line connected with a soft tone, but the cold silence in the modern, pristine kitchen was far heavier. Daniel stood frozen, the glossy smartphone pressed tightly against his ear, his eyes fixed on Vanessa. The woman who had shared his home and his life for years looked at him with an expression of performative innocence that now disgusted him to his core. Beneath the polished marble counter, young Elena, the housemaid, trembled, her hand pressed against the bleeding gash on her forehead.

Vanessa’s posture was rigid, though she maintained the delicate posture of a pristine socialite. Her dark dress, immaculate and sharp, contrasted violently with the wooden spoon she held—a mundane kitchen utensil turned weapon of cruelty. She let out a soft, melodious laugh, a sound that had once charmed rooms but now chilled Daniel to the bone. ""Daniel, darling,"" she said softly, stepping forward. ""You're letting your imagination run away with you. She was clumsy. She dropped a vase and threw a fit. I was simply...""

""I know what I saw, Vanessa,"" Daniel interrupted, his voice dropping an octave, steady and merciless. On the other end of the line, the emergency dispatcher asked for his location. Daniel read off his address without breaking eye contact with his wife. ""Send an ambulance as well,"" he added quietly. ""There is an injured employee.""

Vanessa’s fake smile flickered and died. The mask of perfection crumbled, revealing a raw, jagged malice beneath. Her knuckles turned white around the handle of the spoon before she hurled it into the sink, where it clattered violently. ""You are making a huge mistake,"" she hissed, stepping closer. ""You think anyone will believe a maid over me? You think your reputation can survive this?""

Daniel didn't flinch. He walked slowly past her, kneeling beside Elena. He gently reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out a clean handkerchief, and handed it to the terrified young woman. ""It's over now, Elena,"" he whispered softly, his tone shifting entirely from cold authority to deep human empathy. ""You are safe. No one is ever going to hurt you here again."" Elena looked up, her eyes wide with shock and tearful gratitude, as the distant sound of approaching sirens broke the oppressive silence of the estate.
