Chapter 5: Whispers on Tape

Marcus hurried up the stairs and squeezed into the cramped closet, holding his own flashlight aloft. He whistled low through his teeth as he looked at the open cavity in the wall.

“Well, that’s not your average middle-class hobby,” Marcus said, reaching inside to pull out one of the cassette tapes. He turned it over in his calloused palm. “Looks like a comprehensive collection of behavioral logs. Why would someone record audio in a kid’s bedroom?”

“It’s not just a behavioral log,” Elena said, her mind racing through the implications of what they had uncovered. She looked at the desk in the corner of the bedroom where an old dual-cassette boombox sat half-hidden beneath a pile of coloring books. “David wasn’t just using the snake as a punishment. He was running an ongoing psychological experiment, or monitoring her reactions to stress over an extended period.”

She walked over to the desk, picked up the boombox, and inspected the tape deck. The eject button clicked open smoothly. Without thinking twice about protocol, Elena picked up one of the tapes from the closet, slid it into the machine, and pressed play.

For a few seconds, there was only the hiss of magnetic tape scraping against the heads. Then, the tinny, amplified sound of a young child crying filled the small bedroom. It was Avery’s voice, younger, perhaps five years old, sobbing hysterically in the dark.

*“Stop it, Daddy! It’s cold! Make it go away!”*

Then came David’s voice, calm, measured, and terrifyingly cold: *“Quiet, Avery. Crying attracts the shadows. If you want the shadows to leave, you have to let the snake guard your dreams. Be brave. Be still.”*

The tape clicked as a door shut firmly in the background, followed by hours of muffled weeping and the occasional rustle of scales against fabric.

Elena pressed stop, her thumb pressing so hard against the plastic button that her nail turned white. The reality of what Avery had endured night after night settled over the room with crushing weight. This wasn’t a domestic dispute born of a single bad parenting decision or an eccentric pet owner’s carelessness. This was systematic, premeditated psychological abuse designed to isolate a child, break her sense of security, and force absolute dependence on a deranged father.

“We need to get these tapes to Detective Miller immediately,” Elena said, her voice steeling with determination. “And we need to find a safe, permanent placement for Avery tonight. She can never set foot in this house again.”
