Chapter 13: Reflections in the Mirror

The bathroom mirror in Sarah and Mark’s house was framed in polished oak, reflecting the bright morning light that streamed through the frosted glass window. Avery stood on a small step stool, brushing her long brown hair with smooth, even strokes. She paused for a moment, examining her reflection closely.

The dark circles that used to shadow her eyes were gone, replaced by a healthy, vibrant glow. She wore a simple green t-shirt—coincidentally the same shade as the one her father had worn on the night the police arrived—yet looking at the fabric no longer sent a shiver of terror down her spine. The past was a landscape she had crossed, not a prison she was still locked inside.

Downstairs, the faint sound of bacon sizzling in a skillet drifted up through the floorboards, accompanied by the low hum of morning radio music.

Avery set her hairbrush down on the vanity, stepping off the stool. She walked out into the hallway and paused by the top of the stairs. For a second, her mind flashed back to the dim, oppressive hallway of the old house on Elm Street, where every shadow had felt like a threat and every closed door had hidden a secret. But the memory faded as quickly as it came, replaced by the warm reality of her current life.

She walked down the steps into the kitchen where Mark was flipping pancakes at the stove and Sarah was pouring orange juice into three tall glasses.

“Morning, sleepyhead,” Sarah said with a warm smile, turning around to hand Avery her plate. “Big day today. The school art exhibit opens this afternoon, and we’ve got front-row seats.”

“I’m ready,” Avery said, her voice steady and clear.

She sat down at the wooden kitchen table, taking a bite of her breakfast while the morning sunlight poured over the counter. She was no longer defined by the fears that had once caged her. She was simply a child growing up in the light, surrounded by a family that loved her without conditions, ready to face whatever tomorrow might bring with an open heart and an unyielding spirit.
