Chapter 6: Shadows of the Settlement

The man in the tailored suit, whose lapel badge identified him discreetly as a corporate liaison rather than law enforcement, did not raise his voice, yet every syllable he spoke carried the crushing weight of institutional intimidation. He adjusted his sunglasses slightly, peering down at Aubrey in her pink tutu and Lily in her wheelchair with clinical detachment. ""Mrs. Miller,"" the man addressed Jenna directly, ignoring Evelyn entirely as if the older woman were merely a piece of decorative garden furniture. ""Mr. Vance is wasting his breath on that phone. The confidentiality clauses of the 2018 probate settlement were absolute. Bringing these minors into a public suburban space is a direct breach of contract—and a safety violation of the highest order."" Jenna’s grip on her smartphone tightened so fiercely her fingers cramped. Arthur was still on the line, listening to every calculated threat through the open audio channel. ""The only violation here is the one your employers committed when they swept corporate negligence under the rug,"" Jenna fired back, her voice ringing out with controlled fury. Evelyn, realizing the stranger represented the very corporate entity that had paid hush-money following the fatal crash six years ago, stepped out from behind Jenna’s shoulder. Her face was flushed with righteous rage. ""You killed their parents with your faulty fleet maintenance!"" Evelyn yelled, her voice cracking with decades of suppressed grief. ""And you paid us off to keep our mouths shut while you protected your bottom line!"" The man in the suit didn't flinch. He merely offered a cold, patronizing smile that made Jenna’s blood run cold. ""Mrs. Vance, let’s be entirely realistic,"" the man replied smoothly. ""You signed the settlement checks. You took the compensation. Legally speaking, those children belong to the corporate trust’s guardianship oversight program, administered exclusively through designated proxies—such as Mrs. Miller here. Bringing them out into the open like this... it triggers mandatory repossession protocols."" At the word *repossession*, six-year-old Aubrey burst into fresh tears, not fully understanding the legal jargon but sensing the horrifying intent behind it. Lily screamed, wheeling forward aggressively to ram her footrest against the man’s polished Italian leather shoe, shouting, ""Leave us alone! We aren't property!"" The man winced slightly at the impact, his polite facade cracking for a fraction of a second to reveal a flash of predatory irritation. Jenna seized that micro-second of distraction. Reacting with sudden, decisive athleticism, she lunged forward, grabbed Evelyn’s arm, and yanked both the older woman and the wheelchair-bound Lily toward the front porch, while shouting down the phone line: ""Arthur, send the backup files to the state prosecutor *now*!""
