Chapter 10: The Breach in the Kitchen

Upstairs, the sound of splintering timber echoed like a gunshot through the open-concept floor plan of the suburban home. The wooden broom handle Jenna had jammed into the patio door track had snapped under the relentless torque of a crowbar, and two men in dark suits stepped seamlessly from the fading twilight into the warm interior of the kitchen. Jenna stood near the center island, her phone held steady in her right hand, recording the intrusion with clinical precision. Her light plaid shirt was dusted with drywall powder from the vibrating walls, and her blonde ponytail had loosened slightly, strands framing her pale, determined face. ""You're trespassing on private property, and every second of this is being streamed live to the state prosecutor's secure server,"" Jenna stated, her voice remarkably steady, devoid of the expected hysteria. The lead intruder—a stocky man with a scar running down the side of his jaw—ignored her warning, sweeping his gaze across the living room and toward the central hallway. ""Where are the kids, Mrs. Miller?"" the man asked, his voice low and gravelly as he advanced slowly across the hardwood floor. ""The settlement dictates surrender of all associated minors upon breach of protocol."" ""There are no minors here, only hostages to your corporate crimes,"" Jenna retorted, taking a calculated step backward toward the basement door. She knew she couldn't physically fight two trained operatives, but she only needed to buy enough time for the state police cruiser sirens to begin wailing in the distance. As if answering her silent prayer, a faint, high-pitched wail of distant sirens cut through the evening air, echoing down the suburban street. The intruder with the scarred jaw paused, his head tilting slightly as he listened to the approaching audio cue. His partner cursed under his breath, stepping toward Jenna with sudden, aggressive velocity, reaching out a large hand to snatch the smartphone from her grip. ""Give me the phone!"" the man barked. Jenna sidestepped smoothly, using the kitchen island as a barrier, but the man vaulted over the quartz countertop with surprising agility, cutting off her path to the basement door. The phone camera wobbled wildly in her hand, capturing a dizzying angle of the ceiling before stabilizing on the intruder’s cold, menacing grin. Jenna braced herself for the impact, knowing that dropping the device meant losing their only digital leash to the outside world, yet refusing to surrender the evidence that would finally bring justice to her shattered family.
