Chapter 4: The Doctor’s Verdict

The heavy oak doors of the parlor opened quietly, admitting Dr. Harrison, the family’s longtime private physician. He carried a sleek leather medical case and wore a grave expression that instantly quieted the room. Julian stepped forward, a desperate flicker of hope in his eyes, silently praying that the medical evaluation would somehow invalidate Clara’s claims and hand him back his lost control.

“Dr. Harrison,” Eleanor addressed the physician formally, gesturing toward Clara. “Examine our guest and give us your definitive assessment. We need absolute truth in this room tonight.”

Dr. Harrison nodded respectfully to Eleanor before turning to Clara with a reassuring smile. He retrieved a portable diagnostic monitor from his case, conducting a series of careful, professional checks. The minutes stretched out in agonizing silence, the ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the corner serving as the only reminder of passing time. Clara closed her eyes, offering a silent prayer as she felt the quiet strength of Eleanor’s hand resting reassuringly on the back of the settee.

Finally, Dr. Harrison packed away his instruments and turned to face the room, his expression entirely serious. “The vital signs are stable, though the patient has clearly suffered significant emotional shock and physical exhaustion tonight. More importantly, my readings and preliminary tests confirm her statement beyond any doubt. She is in the early stages of a healthy pregnancy. The future heir of the estate is real.”

Julian staggered backward, his knees hitting the edge of a mahogany side table. The finality of the doctor’s words crushed the last vestige of his defense. All his carefully laid plans, his corporate machinations, and his frantic attempts to purge his life of an inconvenient truth were rendered utterly useless by simple biological fact. He was trapped by his own deception.

Eleanor exhaled slowly, her shoulders dropping an inch as the weight of the confirmation settled over her. She turned her gaze to her son, her eyes hardening into sheets of impenetrable ice. For years, she had watched Julian drift through life with a sense of untouchable entitlement, treating people as disposable commodities. Now, the consequences of his callousness had arrived at his doorstep, demanding a reckoning he could no longer avoid.

“You brought her here, Julian,” Eleanor said coldly, her voice echoing in the vast parlor. “You humiliated her in our halls, and you attempted to cast away your own blood into the freezing night. For such profound dishonor, there must be a severe and immediate price.”
