Chapter 10: The Counter-Strategy

The library smelled of aged leather, pipe tobacco, and polished mahogany. Eleanor sat at the massive oak desk, her fingers steepened thoughtfully as she analyzed Marcus’s intelligence report. Clara stood near the fireplace, her silhouette framed by the amber glow of the hearth, listening intently as the legal strategy was dissected piece by piece.
“If Julian is leaking our supply chain routes to Henderson, he’s violating his non-disclosure agreement and triggering multiple federal trade conspiracy clauses,” Marcus explained, tapping a pen against the dossier. “We can preempt their move by shifting our primary manufacturing logistics to our European subsidiaries before Henderson can capitalize on the leaked data.”
“That will cost us thirty million in immediate logistical overhead,” Eleanor noted calmly, her mind calculating the variables with razor-sharp precision.
“It is a necessary expense to starve them of leverage,” Marcus countered. “More importantly, it forces Julian into direct breach of his settlement waiver, allowing us to escalate his case from a private corporate matter to a federal indictment with zero warning.”
Clara stepped forward from the fireplace, her voice steady and resolute. “What about the custody implications? If Julian is desperate enough to partner with Henderson, could he attempt to use the courts to challenge my custody rights once the child is born?”
Eleanor looked up, her expression softening slightly as she regarded the young woman. She stood up and walked over to Clara, placing a reassuring hand on her arm. “He has already signed away his legal standing through the settlement waiver and his corporate treason. Furthermore, the family trust recognizes you as the sole custodian of the direct lineage. No court in this country will touch a custody claim filed by a fugitive corporate criminal partnering with a known industrial saboteur.”
“We shouldn’t wait for him to make the first move in court,” Clara suggested, surprising both Marcus and Eleanor with the strategic clarity of her thought process. “If Julian is desperate, he will try to confront us directly. He still believes he can intimidate me into advocating for him with you, Eleanor.”
Marcus raised an eyebrow, clearly impressed. “You think he would come here?”
“He has nowhere left to go,” Clara stated simply. “His friends have abandoned him, his money is gone, and Henderson is only using him as a disposable pawn. Desperation makes people predictable.”

Eleanor smiled faintly, a look of profound pride crossing her features. “Then we will set a trap of our own. Let him come to the estate. We will give him all the rope he needs to hang himself permanently.”
