Chapter 6: The Executive Suite

The private elevator ride to the penthouse suite was silent, save for the low, mechanical whir of the cables lifting the car through the reinforced concrete core of the building. Maya stood beside Thomas, the veteran security guard who had offered to escort her up, while the bruised skin on her cheek throbbed quietly in the enclosed space. She kept her eyes fixed on the digital floor indicator as the numbers climbed past thirty, thirty-five, forty, finally stopping at forty-eight. When the heavy brass doors slid open, they revealed a space that felt entirely divorced from the bustling energy of the lobby below.

The penthouse was a sprawling monument to excess and isolation. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic, breathtaking view of the city skyline stretching out beneath a blanket of grey morning clouds. But the interior design told a tragic story of hostile takeover. The warm, mahogany-paneled walls and framed family photographs that Arthur Sterling had curated over decades had been entirely stripped away, replaced by cold, minimalist white leather furniture, abstract art featuring jagged black slashes, and sharp glass tables that felt more like a modern art gallery than a home.

Maya stepped out of the elevator, her sneakers sinking slightly into the expensive, ivory-colored silk rug that dominated the main living area. She walked slowly toward the far wall where a massive portrait of her father used to hang—a painting capturing Arthur Sterling smiling warmly with a book in his hand. In its place now hung a massive, stark mirror framed in polished chrome, reflecting Maya’s tired face, her messy red hair tied back with a simple elastic band, and the fading purple bruise on her cheek. She reached out and lightly touched the cold glass of the mirror, feeling an overwhelming wave of grief wash over her.

""She had it removed within a month of your father’s funeral, Ms. Sterling,"" Thomas said quietly from the doorway, keeping a respectful distance. ""Said the old man's gaze made her guests feel uncomfortable during her evening parties. A lot of things changed around here after you left for London. Good people were let go, contracts were handed out to her personal friends, and the historic preservation budget was entirely redirected into her offshore accounts.""

Maya turned away from the mirror, her green eyes scanning the sterile room with cold, analytical precision. ""She thought that by erasing his physical presence from the building, she could erase his legacy entirely. She didn't understand that my father didn't build this hotel with bricks and mortar alone; he built it with trust, fair wages, and a commitment to the community."" She walked over to the executive desk, a massive slab of white marble that matched the lobby floor, and sat down in the ergonomic leather chair. She pulled her encrypted flash drive from her canvas shoulder bag and inserted it into the secure terminal built into the desk.

Within seconds, a cascading series of financial files, internal emails, and corporate audit logs illuminated the dark screen. Maya began scrolling through the folders, her fingers moving smoothly over the trackpad. The data confirmed her worst suspicions: Eleanor had systematically looted the company’s capital reserves, leaving the hotel heavily leveraged with predatory loans from shadow investment firms. If Maya hadn't returned today to legally claim her controlling stake, the entire enterprise would have been forced into bankruptcy within three months, allowing Eleanor to purchase the assets pennies on the dollar through a shell corporation.

""Thomas,"" Maya said without looking up from the screen.

""Yes, Ms. Sterling?""

""Call an emergency meeting of all department heads for two o'clock this afternoon. I want the head of housekeeping, the chief engineer, the director of food and beverage, and the accounting supervisors in the second-floor conference room. No excuses, no absences."" Maya finally looked up, her gaze piercing and absolute. ""Tell them the old management is gone, and we are going to start cleaning house from the very top down.""
