Chapter 11: The Subpoena

The morning sun broke through the heavy grey clouds, casting a sharp, brilliant light across the downtown financial district. Inside the grand lobby of The Sterling Monarch, the atmosphere was markedly different from the chaos of two days prior. The staff moved with renewed purpose, their uniforms crisp, their posture proud, and their interactions with guests warm and attentive. Maya stood near the concierge desk, reviewing the morning arrival logs on a sleek tablet, when the revolving doors spun rapidly to admit two federal marshals in dark suits, flanked by Officer Marcus Wright.
The entire lobby fell into an instantaneous, respectful hush. Regular guests and employees alike turned to watch as the marshals crossed the white marble floor, their footsteps echoing sharply against the stonework. They walked directly toward the gold ""SM"" logo, where Maya stood waiting, her posture straight, her navy blue blazer buttoned, and her expression entirely composed. The bruise on her cheek was now completely healed, leaving only a faint memory of the violence that had initiated her return.
""Ms. Sterling,"" the lead marshal said, offering a polite nod of professional respect. ""We are executing federal arrest warrants for Eleanor Sterling and Julian Vance on charges of wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement. Assets belonging to their primary holding corporations have been federally frozen as of 8:00 AM this morning.""
Maya nodded slowly, offering a brief, appreciative smile. ""Thank you, Marshal. My legal counsel has compiled all secondary server logs and financial backups in the penthouse office. Thomas will escort you upstairs to secure the physical documentation.""
As the marshals headed toward the private elevators, Officer Wright lingered behind for a moment, stepping closer to Maya with a warm, approving smile. ""I see you didn't need much police intervention after all, Ms. Sterling. Word on the scanner this morning is that your stepmother's legal defense team has completely dissolved.""
""They built a house of cards on stolen foundations, Officer Wright,"" Maya replied calmly, sliding the tablet into her portfolio. ""It only took a single honest breeze to knock the whole thing down. Thank you for your help on day one. You kept the peace when things could have gotten entirely out of hand.""
""Just doing my civic duty,"" Marcus said, tipping his cap before turning to follow the marshals. ""Though I have to admit, watching you take back your company on live television was the highlight of my ten-year career.""

As the police officer exited the hotel, Maya turned her gaze toward the massive glass entrance. Through the revolving doors, she saw a news crew assembled across the street, their camera lenses pointed directly at the hotel's historic facade. Reporters were shouting questions, but none of them could breach the secure perimeter of the lobby. The Sterling Monarch was no longer a battleground; it was a fortress once again.
