Chapter 5

Julian’s voice was barely a whisper, but it carried the lethal weight of a drawn blade. He stood inches from his wife, towering over her, yet Elena did not shrink away. Instead, a dangerous, brittle smile touched the corners of her lips—a reflex of self-preservation masking a deep, festering panic.

"You heard me, Julian," Elena replied, her voice dropping into a register of chilling intimacy. "You’ve spent your entire life treating your family as another portfolio to manage, another asset to balance on a ledger. But a child isn't stock options. A child is a vulnerability. And when you surround yourself with enemies of your own making, vulnerabilities have a habit of being exploited."

Clara gripped the edge of the settee, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird. "Mr. Vance, she’s lying. She’s trying to confuse you so you won't look at what she did to the baby. I saw her face when she picked him up—she wasn't saving him; she was punishing him."

Julian raised a single hand, signaling Clara to silence without ever breaking eye contact with his wife. His mind, trained in high-stakes corporate acquisitions and ruthless corporate restructuring, rapidly analyzed every variable. The unknown man at the gate, the mysterious financial trust, the bruised arm of his infant son, and the cold detachment of a woman he had shared a bed with for four years.

"Who is he, Elena?" Julian asked, his voice steady, though a muscle feathered violently in his jaw. "Give me a name. Right now."

Elena laughed—a short, brittle sound devoid of any humor. "A name won't help you, Julian. By the time you figure out who holds the promissory notes on your father’s old manufacturing plants, the receivership will already be locked in. This house, the art collection, the accounts—they’re already leveraged against debts you didn't even know you inherited."

Julian’s eyes narrowed. For the first time since entering the hallway, a crack of genuine shock appeared behind his stern facade. His family’s legacy, the untouchable Vance empire, was the bedrock of his entire identity. The idea that it could be systematically dismantled from the inside out was unthinkable.

"That's impossible," Julian said, though the absolute conviction in his tone faltered just a fraction. "Every asset is audited quarterly. The board answers to me."

"The board answers to whoever controls the majority voting shares," Elena countered smoothly, stepping past him toward the mahogany desk. She reached down, her gold-heeled shoe clicking softly against the parquet floor, and picked up the small black recording device. She turned it over in her manicured fingers, the red light still blinking against her palm. "And your grandfather left a backdoor in the holding company charter—a contingency clause for female descendants in the direct line of succession. Guess who holds the primary key?"

Julian watched her with a cold, calculating stare. "You."

"Me," Elena confirmed softly. "Or whoever I assign power of attorney to."

Clara watched the dynamic shift between husband and wife with mounting dread. The domestic dispute over a bruised infant had abruptly mutated into a corporate war zone, and she was trapped on the front lines without armor.

"Mr. Vance," Clara whispered, standing up slowly from the settee. "I... I think I should check on the baby. He’s been alone in the nursery for too long."

Elena snapped her head around, her blue eyes flashing with sudden, predatory hostility. "You will stay right where you are, girl. Nobody moves until we establish the terms of this transition."
