Chapter 3

The mahogany-paneled study smelled of aged leather, pipe tobacco that Julian hadn't smoked in years, and the damp chill of the coastal fog rolling in through the floor-to-ceiling windows. It was a room designed for intimidation and quiet negotiations, a space where fortunes were bartered and family scandals were quietly buried. Tonight, it served as an impromptu tribunal.

Julian walked behind the heavy oak desk and seated himself in the high-backed leather chair. He did not invite Elena to sit; she remained standing near the fireplace, her gold heels clicking rhythmically against the herringbone parquet floor as she paced like a caged panther. Clara sat on the edge of a velvet settee near the door, her hands folded tightly in her lap, her eyes cast downward in fearful submission.

Julian placed the small black recording device squarely in the center of the desk. He did not press play immediately. Instead, he steepled his fingers, his gaze drifting from his wife’s rigid silhouette to the trembling maid.

"Let us establish a few baseline facts," Julian began, his voice measured and devoid of emotion. "My son has a bruised radius. The pediatrician will confirm that tomorrow morning, regardless of what story we feed the staff. Clara claims Elena inflicted the injury intentionally during a domestic dispute. Elena claims Clara was negligent and is now lying to deflect blame. And sitting between them is a digital audio file that captured the exact moments leading up to the physical confrontation."

Elena scoffed, leaning back against the marble mantelpiece. "It's a manipulated file, Julian. Anyone with a basic smartphone app can splice audio. She could have recorded us talking yesterday and stitched it together with a sound effect of a child crying."

"It's a dedicated hardware recorder with an encrypted firmware timestamp," Julian replied evenly, his eyes locking onto hers. "It records in an uncompressed format that cannot be easily edited without leaving digital scars. I can have our IT security team verify the integrity of the file within ten minutes."

The silence in the room grew heavy, suffocating. Elena’s pacing stopped. Her jaw tightened, the muscles ticking along her cheekbone betraying the first genuine crack in her armor. She realized, with sudden clarity, that her husband was not simply defending her honor; he was investigating her.

"You're actually entertaining the idea that I would harm my own child," Elena said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper, her blue eyes flashing with genuine fury.

"I am entertaining the reality of what is happening under my roof," Julian corrected, leaning forward. "You have been distant, volatile, and increasingly erratic over the past six months, Elena. You treat this house like a prison and everyone in it like an inmate. I want to know why."

Clara looked up, her voice small and hesitant. "It’s not just the baby, Mr. Vance. Mrs. Vance has been... she’s been meeting someone. A man. Not anyone from our social circle. Someone who comes to the rear gate after dark."

Elena spun around, her face pale with rage. "You lying little tramp! You spend your days spying on me through the service windows?"

"That’s enough!" Julian slammed his palm down on the mahogany desk, the sharp crack echoing like a gunshot through the vaulted room.

The room fell deathly still. Julian reached out, his long fingers hovering over the play button of the black recording device.

"Let's listen to the rest of the file," Julian said quietly. "Before the shouting started."
