Chapter 14 - THE SURFACE BREach

The roar of the oncoming wastewater echoed off the concrete walls like an approaching freight train, the churning water rising past their waists as Julian and the officers finally reached the base of the rusted vertical ladder.

“Up! Get her up first!” Miller shouted, grabbing Clara gently by the waist and lifting her fragile body toward the scarred man waiting on the lower rungs of the ladder, who caught her securely and began hauling her upward toward the faint circle of daylight above.

“Julian, climb!” Vance commanded, pushing the boy firmly onto the rungs while the water surged violently around their chests, carrying debris and floating refuse from the city’s unseen depths.

Julian scrambled upward with desperate energy, his fingers burning against the ice-cold iron as the first massive wave of the flush cycle slammed into the vertical shaft below, sending a wall of spray and foam crashing against the ladder just inches beneath his boots.

“Officer Miller! Grab my hand!” Julian screamed, looking down into the churning torrent where Miller was struggling to keep his footing against the overwhelming force of the current.

Miller managed to hook one arm around the bottom rung of the ladder, but his other hand was pinned by the heavy metal frame of the abandoned wheelchair as the vortex sucked it down into the dark abyss of the drain. “Go, kid! Get to the light! I’m right behind you!”

Julian didn't hesitate; he climbed as fast as his trembling arms could pull him, breaking through the manhole cover just as Vance slammed his shoulder against the rusted iron disc, forcing it open into the crisp, morning air of the northern wetlands.

Scrambling out onto the damp, green grass of an abandoned park just beyond the city limits, Julian collapsed onto his hands and knees, gasping for fresh air that didn't taste of ozone and steel. Clara lay a few feet away on the grass, her breathing shallow and ragged, while Martha and the scarred man frantically worked to assist her as the final stages of labor began under the open sky.

Vance hauled himself out of the manhole just behind Julian, collapsing heavily onto the grass and wiping the filthy water from his face, followed an agonizing second later by Miller, who pulled himself over the rim with a sharp gasp of exertion, his dark uniform soaked and torn.

“We’re outside the municipal grid,” Vance panted, looking around at the quiet trees and the distant skyline shimmering behind a wall of corporate security drones that hovered helplessly at the city border, unable to cross the territorial threshold.

Julian crawled over to his mother’s side, taking her cold hand in his as she opened her eyes one last time, looking past the city towers toward the rising sun.
