Chapter 12 - THE DRAINAGE ESCAPE

The crimson emergency lights pulsed through the underground tunnel like a steady heartbeat of impending doom, painting the unverified citizens in tones of deep blood-red as panic rippled through the makeshift camp.

“They’re here,” the scarred man shouted over the wailing alarm, dropping his tools and grabbing a heavy iron crowbar from the workbench. “The strike teams bypassed the surface locks! They’re dropping tactical units down the ventilation shafts!”

“Martha, we have to move her now,” Officer Miller said, his professional demeanor returning with razor-sharp focus as he grabbed the handles of Clara’s wheelchair. “If the tactical units use acoustic suppression gas, everyone in these tunnels will be unconscious in under two minutes.”

“The aqueduct!” Martha yelled, pointing toward a heavy iron hatch set low into the curve of the subway tunnel wall, half-concealed behind a stack of rusted ventilation pipes. “It’s the only way out! It leads past the city perimeter into the northern wetlands!”

Julian scrambled forward, throwing his weight against the rusted iron wheel of the hatch while Vance and the scarred man rushed to his aid, throwing their shoulders against the heavy metal until it finally gave way with a deafening screech of tearing rust and a rush of damp, cold air.

“Go, go, go!” Miller ordered, wheeling Clara toward the dark, gaping maw of the drainage pipe while the distant sound of heavy boots and mechanized whining echoed down the intersecting corridors.

Julian looked back just once as he climbed into the freezing, ankle-deep water of the aqueduct. Through the haze of red light and rising smoke, he saw the sleek, silver silhouette of a tactical drone hovering at the end of the tunnel, its multi-lens optical array spinning rapidly as it scanned every unverified face in the camp.

“Julian, keep moving!” Clara gasped, her voice barely a whisper as Miller pushed her wheelchair into the rushing, dark water of the pipe, the current swirling around the metal wheels with dangerous force.

Julian scrambled into the darkness behind them, his hands scraping against the rough concrete walls as the iron hatch slammed shut behind them, cutting off the deafening alarm and plunging them into a world of absolute, claustrophobic blackness broken only by the thin beams of the officers' flashlights.
