Chapter 7: The Uninvited Guest

The laughter in the living room was interrupted by a sharp, metallic knock at the front door. The sound cut through the crackle of the fireplace and the low murmur of the stereo, freezing everyone in their seats. Marcus lowered the photo album, his brow furrowing in confusion. David stood up slowly, exchanging a questioning glance with Sarah.
"Are we expecting anyone else?" Marcus asked, leaning forward on the sofa.
"No," Sarah said, her voice dropping an octave as she smoothed down her blouse. "Everyone invited is already here."
The knock came again, sharper and more insistent this time, rattling the glass panes of the sidelights. The festive atmosphere evaporated instantly, replaced by a tense, heavy silence. Emma uncurled her legs from the armchair, her heart beginning to hammer against her ribs. The dark velvet of her dress suddenly felt heavy again, trapping her in a cocoon of anxiety.
David walked briskly toward the entryway, flicking on the porch light before pulling the heavy oak door open. Standing on the porch was a figure wrapped in a dark, oversized winter coat, the hood pulled low to obscure their face against the biting winter wind.
"Can I help you?" David asked, his voice polite but guarded, planting his feet firmly in the threshold.
The figure slowly lowered the hood, revealing the weathered, exhausted face of an older man with piercing blue eyes and a ragged gray beard. He looked at David with a painful mixture of hesitation and desperation.
"David?" the man croaked, his voice rough from the cold. "Is that really you?"
David stumbled backward a half-step, his face draining of all color. The name echoed in the quiet foyer like a gunshot. Sarah stood up from the sofa, walking quickly toward the hallway, her eyes widening in sheer disbelief as she caught sight of the visitor.

"Jonathan?" Sarah gasped, her hand flying to her mouth.
Emma watched from the corner of the living room, her breath catching in her throat. She had heard whispers about Jonathan—her father’s estranged older brother who had vanished from their lives a decade ago after a bitter family fallout over their parents' estate. He had been erased from conversation, treated like a ghost haunting the family tree. And now, on Christmas Eve, the ghost had come back.
