Chapter 14: Opening Gifts

The living room was alive with the cheerful rustle of wrapping paper and the low murmur of holiday chatter. Marcus sat on the sofa, holding a mug of coffee while watching David hand out the remaining packages from beneath the glowing Christmas tree. The tension of the previous evening had melted away, replaced by an easy, familial warmth that felt earned rather than forced.
Emma sat cross-legged on the Persian rug near the fireplace, wearing her comfortable sweater and watching her father hand a small, neatly wrapped box to Jonathan. The older man looked down at the package in disbelief, hesitating before slowly tearing away the red foil paper to reveal a brand-new set of professional mechanic’s wrenches.
Jonathan stared at the tools, his breath hitching as he looked up at David, a thick knot forming in his throat. "David... I didn't get you anything. I came here with nothing."
"You don't need to get us anything," David said, walking over and placing a firm, brotherly hand on Jonathan’s shoulder. "You're here. That's enough. We want you to stay in Ohio, get back on your feet, and maybe... maybe we can actually be brothers again."
Jonathan choked back a sob, pulling David into a fierce, emotional embrace that bridged a decade of silence in a single heartbeat. Sarah watched from the sofa, a soft, genuine smile gracing her lips, completely free of the strained perfectionism that had defined her holidays for so long.
Emma smiled, resting her hands in her lap. She didn't feel the need to jump up and tidy the wrapping paper strewn across the floor. She didn't feel the need to escape to the kitchen to scrub plates and keep the peace. The chaos of the room was just life happening—messy, beautiful, and real.
"Here you go, sweetheart," Sarah said gently, tossing a small, rectangular box toward Emma.
Emma caught it easily, her expressive eyes lighting up with curiosity. She unwrapped the paper to find a delicate, silver charm bracelet with a tiny porcelain plate charm dangling from the clasp. She looked up at her mother, her heart swelling with emotion.

"So you never forget that you don't have to clean up the world to be loved," Sarah whispered, her voice thick with affection.
Emma slipped the bracelet onto her wrist, the silver cool against her skin, feeling the heavy burden she had carried for so long finally lift away into the warm Christmas air.
