Chapter 8

The hospital room felt suddenly smaller, oxygen thinning as the confrontation reached its critical mass. Captain Miller stood like a statue of authority beside Elena’s bed, her presence a tangible shield against Evelyn’s legal machinations and David’s looming intimidation.

Elena looked down at her son. He was sleeping peacefully, completely oblivious to the war being fought over his cradle. The blue-and-white striped blanket rose and fell with his tiny, rhythmic breaths. Every instinct in Elena’s body screamed against letting him go, against handing him over to anyone—even a trusted officer—while her stitches still burned and her milk was just coming in. But she knew the cold reality of the orders in her file. Tomorrow at dawn, her transport plane lifted off from Travis Air Force Base. If she refused the federal placement, child protective services would step in as a neutral third party, and neither she nor her family would have any say in where he went.

“Captain,” Elena whispered, her voice cracking slightly as she pressed a final, lingering kiss to the baby’s soft forehead. “Promise me.”

“You know I will, Sergeant,” Captain Miller answered softly, her official demeanor softening for a fraction of a second as she looked at the young mother. “He’ll be in the base quarters with my family. You’ll have secure video calls twice a week, encrypted through our secure network. No one will touch him.”

Elena nodded slowly. With a heavy, agonizing effort, she uncurled her arms and lifted the swaddled bundle, transferring the infant into the soft fleece-lined carrier held by the social worker. The warmth left her lap instantly, leaving a vast, freezing void in its place. She gripped the metal bedrail to keep from reaching out and pulling him back.

David made a sudden, lunging movement forward, his hand outstretched toward the carrier. “No! You can’t just take my son—!”

Captain Miller stepped squarely into David’s path, her hand resting casually near her service holster. “Take another step, Mr. Vance, and I’ll have base security slap you with a federal restraining order for interference with a military operation. Back down.”

Evelyn grabbed David’s arm, her face rigid with bitter defeat, though her eyes burned with unyielding malice. “Let them go, David. This isn't the end of the road. The federal stay expires the moment her deployment ends. We will be waiting when she comes back.”

Jessica pressed herself against the wall near the window, watching the carrier being zipped shut. Tears streamed silently down her face, cutting tracks through her makeup. As the social worker and Captain Miller turned toward the doorway, Jessica whispered, “Elena... I’m so sorry.”

Elena didn’t look at her sister. She stared straight ahead at the empty doorway, her pale face set in a mask of grim resolve. “Get out of my room. All of you.”

Without another word, Evelyn pulled David backward out of the threshold. The door swung shut behind them, leaving Elena alone in the quiet, sterile room with the rhythmic beep of the monitors and the steady patter of the rain against the glass.
