Chapter 5

The heavy silence in the hospital room stretched on, broken only by the steady beep of the vital signs monitor outside in the corridor. Evelyn lowered the manila folder slowly, her rigid posture finally slackening by a fraction of an inch. The crisp beige suit jacket no longer looked like armor; it looked like a costume for a battle she was suddenly losing.
“You went over my head to the JAG office,” Evelyn said, her voice flat, devoid of its earlier venom. It wasn’t a question.
Elena adjusted the striped blanket around her son, ensuring his tiny nose and mouth were completely unobstructed. “You tried to blindside a recovering soldier with an expired jurisdictional technicality, Evelyn. Did you really think I wouldn't have a contingency plan? My life has been about redundancy plans since my second tour in the Kandahar province.”
Jessica walked slowly back from the window, her white trench coat trailing behind her. She looked exhausted, the skin beneath her eyes dark and bruised from crying. She reached out tentatively, her fingers hovering inches from the baby’s blanket before pulling back as if burned.
“Elena... is it true? Is he going to Captain Miller’s house on base? Is he going to be safe?” Jessica’s voice broke on the final word.
“Safe, fed, and surrounded by people who don’t treat a child like a trophy in a bitter family feud,” Elena answered coldly. She looked up at her sister, refusing to soften her gaze. “You broke my trust, Jess. You let her walk in here with these papers while I was still hooked to an IV pump. I will never forget that.”
Evelyn cleared her throat, regaining a sliver of her characteristic composure. She snapped her briefcase shut with a sharp, echoing click. “This isn't over, Elena. The military may grant you a temporary reprieve during your deployment, but when you rotate back stateside, my petition for permanent grandparent visitation and custody re-evaluation will be waiting on the desk. You can’t fight biology and time forever.”
“We’ll see about that,” Elena said quietly.
Just then, the door swung open wide. The nurse from earlier stepped back into the room, flanked this time by a towering, broad-shouldered man in civilian clothes—Major David Vance, Evelyn’s estranged son and Elena’s ex-husband, who had been dishonorably discharged three years prior.
David stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes locking onto the baby in Elena’s arms. His expression was a volatile mix of shock, guilt, and lingering entitlement.

“What is he doing here?” Elena’s voice hardened instantly, her adrenaline spiking as the full weight of the ambush became terrifyingly clear.
