Chapter 6: The Scramble for Survival

The heavy oak desktop lifted upward like a trapdoor, revealing Leo huddled in the dust and shadows. The masked operative stared down at the teenager, his dark eyes devoid of any human empathy. For a terrifying second, time seemed to stretch infinitely. Leo’s muscles tensed, his instincts screaming at him to move, but his limbs felt like lead.

Before the operative could reach down and grab him by the collar of his dark blue hoodie, a sudden, violent crash echoed from the other side of the room. David, despite being outnumbered and outmatched, had managed to sweep the legs of the first operative, sending both men crashing through the side table and shattering a heavy ceramic lamp against the floorboards.

""Run, Leo! Get out of the house!"" David shouted, his voice cracking with exertion as he pinned one of the intruders to the floor, driving his elbow downward in a brutal, desperate strike.

Leo didn't hesitate. He scrambled out from beneath the desk on all fours, scrambling past the tangle of fighting men. His shoulder clipped the corner of the bookshelf, sending another stack of paper fluttering down like wounded birds. He hit the hardwood hallway floor, regaining his footing in his grey sweatpants and sneakers, and sprinted toward the front foyer.

Behind him, a muffled curse echoed through the study, followed by the heavy thud of combat boots taking up pursuit.

Leo reached the entryway, his hands flying to the bench where he had tossed his dark grey backpack. He grabbed the straps, swinging the heavy bag over his shoulders in a frantic, clumsy motion. He reached for the deadbolt on the front door, twisting the heavy iron lock and pulling the heavy wood open just as a gloved hand lunged from the hallway darkness to grab his shoulder.

""Got you,"" a harsh voice hissed behind him.

Adrenaline surged through Leo’s veins with the force of an electric shock. He twisted his body violently, shrugging his shoulder out of the dark blue hoodie's sleeve. The fabric ripped slightly as the operative was left holding only empty cloth while Leo tumbled forward out the front door and onto the gravel driveway.

The cool night air hit his face like a physical blow. The towering oak trees cast long, writhing shadows under the pale moonlight. Leo didn't look back. He sprinted down the winding driveway, his sneakers crunching loudly against the loose gravel. Every breath burned his lungs like fire, but he forced his legs to move faster, pushing past his limits.

As he reached the edge of the property where the driveway met the main country road, headlights suddenly swept across the trees. A sleek, unmarked dark SUV pulled off the shoulder, blocking his path. Leo skidded to a halt, raising his arms to shield his eyes from the blinding high beams.

The passenger door swung open, and a tall figure stepped out into the glare of the headlights. It wasn't the masked operatives from the house. It was a woman in a sharp trench coat, her blonde hair pulled back into a tight bun, her expression severe and unrelenting.

""Leo Vance,"" the woman said, her voice cutting through the hum of the idling engine. ""Get in the car. Right now.""

Leo froze, backing up a step, his hand instinctively patting the front pocket of his sweatpants to ensure the flash drive was still secure. ""Who are you? Where's my dad?""

""Your father is currently fighting for his life against men who work for the exact same agency I'm trying to help him expose,"" the woman said, stepping closer and flashing an open federal badge that glowed faintly under the streetlights. ""My name is Agent Rachel Hayes. And if you stay on this road for another thirty seconds, you won't live to see sunrise.""

Leo looked back toward the dark silhouette of his house half a mile up the winding driveway. Faint shadows were moving near the front porch. The operatives had cleared the house and were heading his way.

With no other choice left, Leo dove into the back seat of the SUV. Agent Hayes slammed the door shut behind him, vaulted into the passenger seat, and shouted a single word to the driver.

""Drive.""
