Chapter 5: Breach at Midnight

The grandfather clock in the corner seemed to stop ticking as the silence in the study deepened into something dangerous. David’s hand moved with instantaneous, terrifying speed. In a fraction of a second, his fingers unlocked the drawer beneath his desk, swept past a stack of manila folders, and emerged clutching a matte-black Sig Sauer pistol. He flicked the safety off with a soft, metallic click that sounded like thunder in the quiet room.

Leo froze in the armchair, his breath catching in his throat. He opened his mouth to speak, but David raised a single finger to his lips, demanding absolute silence.

""Stay behind the desk,"" David whispered, his voice stripped of all paternal warmth, replaced entirely by the ice-cold discipline of a federal operative. ""Do not move, no matter what you hear.""

Leo nodded mutely, sliding out of the armchair and dropping onto his hands and knees, crawling beneath the heavy oak desk. The hardwood floor was cold against his palms. He pulled his dark blue hoodie tight around his shoulders, his heart pounding so hard he was certain anyone in the hallway could hear it.

Outside the study door, the soft creak of floorboards announced an intruder moving down the hallway. It was a slow, deliberate sound—not the hurried footsteps of a burglar, but the synchronized, heavy stride of professionals who knew exactly where they were going.

David stood up slowly, positioning himself beside the heavy oak door. He pressed his back against the wall, holding the firearm close to his chest, his eyes locked on the narrow strip of light visible beneath the door frame.

*Click.*

The brass doorknob turned slowly, resisting for a split second before the latch gave way. The door swung inward, casting a wedge of hallway light across the study floor.

A figure stepped into the doorway, silhouetted against the dim amber light of the hall. The intruder wore a matte-black tactical vest over a dark turtleneck, cargo pants, and combat boots. A suppressed submachine gun hung from a tactical sling across their chest, and their face was obscured by a dark neoprene balaclava, leaving only two cold, calculating eyes visible.

The intruder took two steps into the room before realizing David was waiting for him.

""Drop the weapon! Federal Agent!"" David roared, stepping out from the shadows and leveling his pistol directly at the intruder's chest.

The masked operative didn't panic. There was no gasp, no cartoonish reaction of surprise. With terrifying efficiency, the intruder’s hands twitched toward their chest sling.

*Bang.*

The muffled crack of David’s firearm pierced the room, the bullet embedding itself in the doorframe just inches from the intruder's head. ""I said drop it!"" David commanded again, his voice echoing off the walls.

Instead of complying, the intruder raised their weapon. Before David could fire a second time, a second operative stepped up behind the first, lunging into the doorway and kicking outward with a combat boot. The heavy kick struck David’s wrist, knocking the pistol from his grip. The firearm skittered across the floorboards, sliding deep under the bookshelf.

""Vance,"" a cold, modulated voice spoke from behind the balaclava. ""You're off the grid. Hand over the drive, and this ends tonight.""

""Never,"" David spat, lunging forward with his bare hands to tackle the lead operative.

The two men crashed into the bookshelf, sending leather-bound volumes and heavy binders cascading onto the floor in a chaotic avalanche. Leo watched in absolute horror from beneath the desk, his hands clamped over his mouth to muffle his breathing. He could hear the heavy thud of fists meeting flesh, the tearing of fabric, and the harsh, ragged breathing of his father struggling against two armed assailants.

""Dad!"" Leo whispered frantically, his fingers digging into the dust beneath the desk.

One of the operatives broke away from the grapple, turning his head sharply toward the desk as if sensing movement. A gloved hand reached down, grabbing the edge of the wooden desktop and lifting it with casual strength.

Leo’s eyes locked onto the masked operative standing inches away, realizing that hiding was no longer an option.
