Chapter 7: The Unwelcome Visitor

The intercom buzzer echoed through the quiet apartment like a blaring alarm. Mark walked over to the wall-mounted video intercom unit, his fingers hovering over the screen. He pressed the activation button, and the small digital display flickered to life, revealing Clara’s distorted, frantic face squeezed into the camera lens downstairs in the lobby. Her elaborate wedding updo was completely ruined, her hair hanging in tangled, damp strands around her flushed face. She was still wearing the same crumpled, stained white wedding gown from the night before, though the hem was torn and caked in dark street grime.

"Mark! I know you're up there! Open this door right now!" Clara’s voice screeched from the intercom speaker, harsh and high-pitched with pure panic. "You cannot do this to me! You don't ignore my calls! Open the door before I call the police!"

Erin stood near the dining table, watching the small screen with a cold, detached expression. Leo, distracted by the shouting from the hallway monitor, abandoned his spot at the balcony glass and walked slowly back toward his mother, wrapping his small arms tightly around her leg for comfort. Erin gently patted his head, never taking her eyes off Mark.

"Don't let her up," Erin said quietly. "She’s desperate, Mark. When Clara is desperate, she becomes unpredictable."

"She needs to face this," Mark replied, his voice resolute. He pressed the release button, unlocking the lobby door downstairs. "She can't run away from the police or the courts by screaming at an intercom."

A few agonizing minutes later, heavy, stumbling footsteps echoed down the carpeted hallway outside the apartment. Then came a violent, frantic hammering on the heavy oak door. "Mark! Open this door! Open it right now or I swear I’ll break the glass!" Clara screamed, her fists pounding rhythmically against the wood.

Mark didn't hesitate. He turned the deadbolt and pulled the door open wide.

Clara stumbled forward into the entryway, nearly losing her footing on the hardwood floor. The sight of her was genuinely shocking. The once-radiant bride looked like a tragic phantom of her former self. Her expensive designer gown was torn at the shoulder, stained with spilled red wine and street mud. Her makeup had smeared into dark streaks under her eyes from hours of hysterical crying. She looked past Mark, her wild eyes instantly locking onto Erin and Leo standing by the dining table.

"You!" Clara hissed, her voice dropping into a venomous snarl as she lunged forward, pointing a trembling, manicured finger at her sister. "This is all your fault! You ruined my life! You couldn't just stay invisible, could you? You had to bring your pathetic kid and your ruined life to my wedding just to destroy me!"

Erin didn't flinch. She stepped slightly in front of Leo, shielding him with her body, her gaze remaining entirely level and unimpressed. "Nobody destroyed you, Clara. You destroyed yourself the moment you decided that lies and cruelty were acceptable tools to get what you wanted."

Clara spun back around to face Mark, grabbing the lapels of his linen shirt with frantic, claw-like hands. "Tell her she's lying, Mark! Tell her you know how crazy she is! We’re married! We’re supposed to be a team! Don't listen to them, they’re just trying to take everything from us!"

Mark looked down at her hands gripping his shirt, then slowly reached up and peeled her fingers away one by one, with absolute, chilling finality. He stepped back, putting a definitive physical barrier between them. "We aren't married, Clara. The paperwork was never filed with the county clerk last night. I made sure of that before we even walked down the aisle."
