Chapter 13: Autumn Leaves

The crisp air of late October rustled through the bright orange and red canopy of trees lining the suburban street outside the Vance family home. The lawn, once overgrown and neglected, had been carefully trimmed and replanted with vibrant flower beds by a local landscaping crew. A wooden porch swing hung gently from the front rafters, swaying softly in the afternoon breeze.
Erin sat on the porch swing, wrapped in a comfortable wool cardigan, holding a cup of herbal tea as she watched Leo chase a soccer ball across the freshly mowed grass. The boy laughed brightly, his movements coordinated and full of unbridled energy. The speech therapy sessions at the downtown clinic had been working wonders; Leo’s vocabulary had expanded rapidly, and the frustration that once caused him to withdraw into himself had all but vanished.
