Chapter 8

The following morning, the sun rises without drama. No buckets of water, no shouting matches in the hallway, no ticking time bombs hidden in cream-colored envelopes. Clara sits at the dining room table with her laptop open, the blue-white glow of the screen illuminating her face in the early morning light. Spread out around her are financial statements, tax returns, and corporate restructuring plans for the family timber business.

David walks into the kitchen carrying two mugs of steaming black coffee. He sets one down gently beside Clara’s laptop before pulling out a chair and sitting across from her. He is dressed in a fresh blue t-shirt and jeans, looking more rested than he has in years.

“You’re up early,” David says, taking a sip of his coffee.

“I have a meeting with the board of directors at nine,” Clara replies without looking up from her screen. “We need to vote on restructuring the payroll and liquidating the secondary storage lots before the end of the quarter.”

David nods slowly, tracing the rim of his mug with his thumb. “I looked over the warehouse inventory reports last night. You were right about the logistics bottlenecks. Mother insisted on keeping three full-time administrative positions filled by her old bridge club friends who haven’t processed a shipment since 2018.”

Clara looks up from her screen, meeting his eyes. “Nepotism is an expensive hobby, David. Especially when you’re millions of dollars in debt.”

“I know,” David sighs, leaning back in his chair. “I let it happen because I wanted to keep the peace. I thought keeping everyone comfortable was the same thing as being a good son.”

“Peace built on deception isn't peace, David. It’s an armistice waiting for someone to drop a bucket of water,” Clara says gently.

The front doorbell rings, cutting through the quiet morning air. Both of them freeze for a second, a conditioned reflex from years of unexpected disruptions. Then, realizing there is no threat on the other side of the door, Clara closes her laptop while David stands up to answer it.

A moment later, David returns holding a small cardboard box delivered by the local courier service. He sets it on the table. The return address reads: Sterling & Croft, Attorneys at Law.

Clara uses a pen knife to slice through the packing tape. Inside lies the original deed to the estate, now officially transferred into a joint living trust bearing both of their names, completely clear of liens.
