Chapter 1

The shock of ice water evaporating off skin leaves a sharp, stinging cold that cuts straight through the heavy fog of sleep. Clara gasps, her lungs seizing as the metal bucket hits the hardwood floor with a hollow, metallic clang. Her beige silk pajama shorts are plastered instantly to her thighs, soaking through the mattress foam beneath her. Across the room, Martha stands with her shoulders squared, her fluffy pink bathrobe smelling faintly of lavender and old starch. Her short grey hair is perfectly coiffed, defying the early morning hour.

“Get up, you lazy bones! You’re totally trashy!” Martha’s voice rasps through the bedroom, carrying the brittle edge of a decades-long grudge.

Clara’s heart hammers against her ribs, a wild, trapped bird beating its wings in the dark. She doesn’t scream. She doesn’t burst into melodramatic tears. Instead, a slow, icy fury settles deep into her bones, replacing the initial panic with a razor-sharp clarity. She blinks water droplets from her long blonde lashes, her blue eyes narrowing as she stares at her mother-in-law.

Before Martha can lower the empty bucket, heavy footsteps thunder down the hallway. The bedroom door swings open so hard it bangs against the drywall. David stands in the threshold, his short brown hair messy from sleep, wearing a plain blue t-shirt and faded jeans. His face is pale, his eyes wide with a mixture of shock and incandescent fury.

“Mother, what are you doing?” David demands, his voice cracking slightly on the high note of disbelief. He looks from the dripping bed to the metal bucket, his hands clenching into tight fists at his sides.

Martha doesn’t flinch. She stands firm by the bed, holding the empty metal bucket like a trophy, her expression stern and unapologetic.

“I’m teaching your wife discipline,” Martha replies, her tone flat, as if she has just corrected a schoolboy’s grammar.

Clara slowly pushes the sodden, heavy blanket off her legs. The fabric clings to her skin like a second wet skin, but she ignores the chill. She climbs out of the bed, her bare feet hitting the cold floorboards. She straightens her posture, towering slightly over the older woman, and walks past Martha toward the doorway, her stride deliberate and unhurried.

“It’s time to show these fools who’s really in charge around this place,” Clara says quietly, the words dropping into the tense air like lead weights.

She brushes past David, pausing just long enough to meet his stunned gaze. The bedroom fills with a heavy, suffocating silence.
