Chapter 14: Final Verdict and Sentencing

The federal courtroom was quiet on the damp November morning when Judge Harrison delivered the final sentencing. The press gallery was sparse, the initial media frenzy having faded into the background hum of routine legal proceedings. Julian and Evelyn stood before the bench in standard navy-blue institutional jumpsuits, their hair graying, their posture reflecting the absolute deflation of their former social standing.
Judge Harrison held the final sentencing document in her hands, her expression grave and measured. ""Julian Sterling, for your central role in orchestrating systemic corporate fraud, asset concealment, and conspiracy, this court sentences you to twelve years in a federal correctional facility, with no possibility of parole for the first eight years. Evelyn Sterling, considering your active complicity, direction of illegal asset concealment, and abuse of fiduciary trust, you are sentenced to eight years.""
The gavel came down with a sharp, echoing crack that resonated through the quiet room. There were no gasps, no weeping, and no dramatic protests. Julian closed his eyes for a brief moment, accepting the verdict with a heavy, broken resignation. Evelyn stared straight ahead at the polished wood of the defense table, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. The empire they had fought so viciously to preserve had dissolved into a prison cell, proving that no wall of wealth or status could ever protect anyone from the consequences of cruelty and deceit.
As the marshals stepped forward to escort them back down the secure hallway toward holding, Julian cast one final, lingering glance toward the back of the courtroom. He had hoped, against all logic, that Clara might be sitting there—not out of malice, but to offer some small sign of closure. But the back rows were empty. Clara was miles away, living a real life, completely untethered from the ghosts of her past.

The heavy wooden doors of the courtroom closed behind them with a definitive thud, sealing away the last remnants of the Sterling dynasty. The cycle of control and intimidation was broken, replaced entirely by accountability, truth, and the quiet march of time.
