Chapter 10: The Unraveling Empire

By noon, the Sterling mansion felt less like a home and more like an industrial warehouse. Federal marshals and court-appointed liquidators moved from room to room, boxing up luxury goods, seizing financial records, and disabling the automated security systems. The floor-to-ceiling glass windows, which once offered a breathtaking view of a private paradise, now only reflected the sterile, fluorescent lighting of an ongoing audit.

Julian and Evelyn sat quietly in the breakfast nook, their belongings reduced to two small bags resting near the French doors. They had eaten nothing all morning. The silence between mother and son was no longer filled with strategic plotting or shared ambition; it was a profound, suffocating vacuum born of mutual realization.

""Your father would have been ashamed of us,"" Evelyn murmured suddenly, her eyes fixed on the gleaming marble floor. ""He worked for thirty years to build this name, to secure our standing in this city... and we let arrogance dismantle it in less than a decade.""

Julian looked at his mother, feeling a strange mixture of resentment and sorrow. ""Father didn't build it on solid ground, Mother. He built it on hidden debt, manipulated contracts, and the silent suffering of anyone who got in his way. We just inherited the house of cards and acted like we were invincible.""

A federal agent walked into the kitchen, holding a clipboard and looking directly at Julian. ""Mr. Sterling, your transport to the federal courthouse has arrived. The preliminary arraignment is scheduled for 2:00 PM.""

Julian stood up slowly, picking up his duffel bag. He looked down at Evelyn, who remained seated, staring blankly at the marble island. ""Are you coming, Mother? Or are you waiting for the marshals to escort you separately?""

Evelyn slowly raised her head, taking a deep, shuddering breath. She stood up, smoothing the front of her expensive grey dress—a garment that now felt entirely out of place in the grim reality they were entering. She picked up her small handbag, leaving behind the diamond necklace and earrings on the kitchen counter as instructed by the receivership team.

""Let's get it over with, Julian,"" she whispered, her voice steadying with a brittle, last vestige of pride.

As they walked out the back doors toward the waiting federal transport vehicles, neither of them looked back at the grand estate. The heavy iron security gates stood wide open, welcoming in the cold, unyielding light of justice. Every step they took away from the mansion was a step deeper into accountability, stripping away the last layers of illusion and leaving them face-to-face with the truth.
