Chapter 3: Champagne and Delusions

High above the city, in the sprawling penthouse suite of the Grand Horizon Hotel, the champagne was flowing freely. Julian Vance stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, swirling a vintage crystal flute of Dom Pérignon. Below him, the glittering expanse of the metropolis seemed to bow at his feet. Eleanor sat on the white velvet sofa, admiring the way the ambient light caught the facets of her diamond necklace. The air was thick with self-congratulation and the heady scent of victory.
“I still can’t believe you finally had the backbone to put her out on the street, darling,” Eleanor purred, taking a delicate sip of her champagne. “For a moment there, I thought she’d haunt that lobby forever with her gloomy black dresses and quiet judgment.”
“Elena was always a relic of the past,” Julian replied, his voice laced with arrogant dismissal as he turned to face the room. “She helped lay the foundation when we were nobody, true, but she didn’t have the vision for the luxury tier. This hotel, this entire lifestyle—it’s because of my risk tolerance, my charm, and my eye for elegance. Without me, she’s just a woman standing in an empty room.”
“And now she’s gone,” Eleanor smiled, her eyes gleaming with predatory satisfaction. “The board meeting tomorrow morning is just a formality. Once we consolidate the remaining shares, your name will be the only one on the title deed. We can finally sell the coastal properties, buy that yacht in Monaco, and leave all this provincial nonsense behind.”
Julian walked over and kissed the top of Eleanor’s head, feeling invincible. He checked his luxury wristwatch—eleven-fifteen. The night was young, the alcohol was smooth, and his future had never looked brighter. He felt a fleeting flash of memory—Elena standing at the bottom of the stairs, holding her phone with that strange, unreadable expression—but he brushed it aside with a careless laugh. What could a discarded woman possibly do against a titan of industry like himself? He walked back to the window, raising his glass to the distant horizon, utterly blind to the silent storm brewing in the digital ether below.

At that exact moment, down in the basement server room of the hotel, the main terminal blinked. A silent cascade of green text began scrolling down the black monitors with terrifying speed. The master override code, authenticated by Elena Vance’s biometric signature, had bypassed the firewall. The primary database flagged every single asset linked to Julian Vance as frozen, pending immediate foreclosure. The physical security locks engaged simultaneously across all exterior doors, sealing the penthouse from the outside world as the digital siege commenced.
