Chapter 7: The Ghost in the East Wing

The rain began to fall in heavy, rhythmic sheets against the reinforced glass of the safe house windows, blurring the dark outline of the pine forest outside. Inside, Vance and the federal investigator spread a detailed architectural schematic of the Sterling estate across the stainless-steel table. The blueprint revealed a labyrinth of service tunnels, sub-basement archives, and sealed residential wings that did not appear on any public municipal map.
"According to the backup logs, Thomas Sterling was transferred from the East Wing sanatorium to a private medical facility in Baltimore approximately forty-eight hours ago," the investigator said, running a highlighter along a subterranean utility corridor marked in red ink. "Right around the time Clara’s emergency beacon was first programmed into her smartwatch."
Clara cradled the baby with one arm while pointing to a secondary junction near the ballroom foundation. "They didn't just move him for his health. They used him as collateral. Eleanor knew I was planning to leave, and she needed leverage that federal financial audits couldn't touch."
"If Thomas is alive and held in an unregistered facility, we have grounds for an immediate rescue and search warrant expansion," Vance said, reaching for his secure radio handset. "I can have a tactical team at the Baltimore location before dawn."
"No," Clara said firmly. "If you send a standard tactical unit, Eleanor's internal security will trigger the purge protocol. Every physical document, every hard drive, and every witness connected to Thomas will be systematically eliminated before your team breaches the front door."
Vance looked at her skeptically. "What do you propose we do, Dr. Hayes? Walk in through the front gate with a polite request?"
"We use the same tunnel system they used to move him," Clara replied, tapping the blueprint near the old wine cellar entrance. "I spent four years cataloging the estate's historical renovations for the foundation's archive project. I know every brick, every blind spot, and every backup generator on that property."
Julian’s name suddenly echoed from the communications console on the wall, where Vance had left an open audio feed connected to the temporary holding facility downtown. The speaker hissed with static before Julian's voice broke through, raw and frantic.
“Vance! If you're listening to this, you need to pull your teams back from the estate immediately! Mother isn't just waiting for a trial—she’s initiated the contingency protocol. The archives are rigged.”
The audio feed cut off abruptly with a sharp electronic shriek, leaving only the sound of heavy rain ticking against the glass.

Vance stared at the speaker box, his jaw tightening. "Was that a trap, or was your ex-husband trying to save his own skin?"
"Both," Clara said quietly, shifting the baby to her other shoulder. "Julian is terrified of his mother, but he’s even more terrified of dying alone in a federal cell. If the archives are rigged, it means Thomas is down there with them."
