Chapter 11: The Turning Point

Clara inserted the silver pendant into the star-shaped keyhole of the console. The metal fit with a satisfying, precise click, as if the decades-old mechanism had been waiting specifically for this exact touch. The ticking sound of the timer did not stop immediately; instead, the red digital readout flickered, shifting from a countdown into a steady, amber-colored pause at 01:14:02.

"It's holding," Vance said, exhaling a long, slow breath he didn't realize he'd been holding. He shifted the baby carefully in his arms, watching as the infant stirred slightly before settling back into a deep, untroubled sleep. "You stopped the primary sequence."

"Not yet," Clara said, her hand resting firmly on the silver pendant. "The timer is paused, but the archive vault is still locked from the main house. If Eleanor inputs her master code from upstairs, the thermal charge will override this manual key."

Thomas swung his legs over the side of the metal cot, his bare feet touching the cold concrete floor for the first time in over a decade. He winced as a wave of dizziness hit him, but he forced himself upright, gripping the edge of the console to steady his trembling frame. "She won't be able to input anything from upstairs, Clara. Not if the federal marshals executed the search warrant properly."

"They executed the warrant for financial fraud," Vance corrected grimly, checking his sidearm. "They didn't know about this sub-level bunker. If Eleanor is still sitting in her study, she has full access to the house-wide intercom and the secondary terminal."

Clara turned to face Vance, her expression hardening into absolute resolve. "Then we don't wait for her to make the next move. We go up."

"Go up?" Vance raised an eyebrow. "Dr. Hayes, the main staircase is blocked by the security teams we locked out, and the elevator shaft is rigged."

"We don't use the stairs," Thomas whispered, pointing a thin, pale finger toward a narrow ventilation ladder set into the dark corner of the vault ceiling. "That shaft leads directly up behind the wainscoting of Eleanor's private study. It was built during the prohibition era for the estate's founders to monitor their guests without being seen."

Vance looked from Thomas to Clara, then down at the peaceful infant sleeping in his arms. He nodded slowly, his tactical instincts overriding any bureaucratic hesitation. "All right. You lead the way, Dr. Hayes. My operatives will secure the rear perimeter once we reach the upper level."

Clara did not hesitate. She grabbed her tactical flashlight, checked the secure latch of her fleece jacket, and reached up to grab the first rung of the rusted iron ladder leading straight into the dark, echoing heart of the Sterling empire.
