Chapter 7: Facing the Judge

The federal courthouse in downtown Chicago was a formidable fortress of gray limestone and heavy oak doors. Inside Courtroom 3B, the air was cool and filled with the subdued murmur of reporters, legal teams, and concerned observers. Arthur Vance sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing his impeccably tailored beige suit and vest, his posture rigid and attentive. Beside him sat Elena, her dark hair neatly styled, her bruised cheek partially concealed by a wide-brimmed hat she wore as much for comfort as for style.

At the defense table, Julian sat in a crisp gray suit provided by his newly appointed court-funded counsel, looking vastly different from the disheveled man dragged from the Vance estate. Yet, the arrogance in his eyes remained, darting nervously toward the prosecution's overflowing evidence boxes.

Judge Harrison, a stern-faced woman with decades of federal bench experience, adjusted her glasses as she reviewed the initial charging documents. “We are here for the preliminary arraignment and bond hearing in the matter of United States versus Julian Vance. The charges include interstate stalking, wire fraud, and illegal interception of communications.”

Julian’s attorney stood up, buttoning his jacket. “Your Honor, we enter a plea of not guilty to all charges. We contend that the digital evidence presented by the prosecution has been improperly gathered by private security forces without a federal warrant, constituting a breach of chain of custody.”

Agent Miller, sitting at the prosecution table, passed a single manila folder to the Assistant U.S. Attorney, who immediately rose in response.

“Your Honor, the initial physical intervention at the Vance estate was precipitated by an immediate domestic emergency involving physical violence, fully documented by emergency dispatch records,” the prosecutor stated firmly. “Furthermore, all subsequent digital forensics were secured via federal search warrants executed under strict judicial oversight. There is no chain of custody violation.”

The prosecutor slid a certified hard drive onto the clerk’s desk. “Moreover, Your Honor, we have uncovered a pattern of intimidation targeting key witnesses, including recorded phone calls made from the detention center where the defendant attempted to coerce testimony.”

Judge Harrison reviewed the transcript handed up by the clerk, her lips pressing into a thin, disapproving line. She looked up over her spectacles, fixing a cold, unblinking stare on Julian.

“Mr. Vance, the gravity of these charges, combined with credible evidence of witness tampering and clear intent to flee the jurisdiction, paints a very distinct picture,” Judge Harrison said, her voice echoing clearly through the quiet courtroom. “Bail is denied. You will remain remanded to federal custody pending trial.”

Julian slammed his cuffed hands onto the table, a sudden flash of rage crossing his face, but two marshals immediately stepped behind him, guiding him firmly toward the side exit. Arthur watched him leave without a word of triumph, only a quiet, resolute calm.
