Chapter 10: Family Betrayal

The shock of Agent Miller’s revelation hung heavy in the library long after the secure call had ended. Richard Vance—Elena’s cousin and the deputy general counsel of the firm—had been working hand-in-glove with Julian to subvert the company from within. The realization that the betrayal ran within the family bloodline struck Arthur harder than any external attack could have.
“Richard?” Elena whispered, shaking her head in sheer disbelief. “He grew up in this house. We used to study law together in this very room.”
“Greed has a way of corrupting even the closest ties,” Arthur said coldly, his face set in stone. He stood up abruptly, walking over to the fireplace to stare into the amber embers. The betrayal of his nephew was a personal failure in his eyes, a blind spot born of familial loyalty. “Richard always felt entitled to a larger share of the executive mantle. When I appointed you to the board instead of him years ago, bitterness must have taken root.”
Arthur turned back to face his daughter, his posture rigid with absolute resolve. “We cannot hesitate. If Richard is tied to Julian’s financial syndicate, he poses an immediate threat to our corporate integrity and your personal safety.”
“What do you want to do, Dad?” Elena asked, standing up to meet his gaze. The hesitation that had defined her months of abuse was entirely gone, replaced by a fierce, collaborative determination.
“We set a trap of our own,” Arthur stated, his voice ringing with quiet authority. “Marcus Thorne is still loyal to this family. We will feed Richard a piece of controlled corporate intelligence—a fake audit report indicating that the offshore accounts have already been frozen by federal authorities. If Richard panics and tries to contact Julian’s legal team or transfer remaining funds, his digital signature will trigger the final trap.”

By late evening, the plan was set into motion. Marcus Thorne executed the secure document transfer to Richard’s corporate terminal, logging every keystroke and network ping from the deputy’s office. Father and daughter waited in the study, watching the live monitoring screen provided by the security team.
At 11:42 PM, the terminal alert blinked red. Richard Vance had accessed an encrypted secondary channel, attempting to route a frantic, encrypted data packet to an offshore server associated with Julian’s defense team. The digital trap snapped shut instantly, locking Richard out of the corporate network and instantly dispatching federal agents to his residence.
