Chapter 14: The Arrest

The rain began to fall again outside the tall glass windows of the attorney general’s office, washing away the grime of the city in sheets of silver water. Through the secure television monitor mounted on the conference room wall, Katie watched a live news feed broadcast from downtown.
A fleet of unmarked federal vehicles and dark police cruisers had surrounded the gleaming glass skyscraper housing Vance Holdings. Floodlights cut through the misty evening, illuminating the sleek corporate entrance where reporters swarmed like angry hornets.
Federal agents in tactical vests escorted a tall, handcuffed figure out through the glass doors. Julian Vance kept his head ducked low beneath a dark trench coat, his wrists securely cuffed behind his back, refusing to look at the cameras flashing relentlessly in his face. As he was guided into the back of a waiting transport van, the camera angle shifted briefly, catching the glint of the vintage Art Deco sapphire ring still secured to his left hand—the very piece of evidence that had started this entire chain of events at the church altar.
Marcus walked over, handing Katie a sealed manila envelope containing the official protective custody and estate restoration orders.
"It’s over, Katie," the prosecutor said softly. "Your mother’s name has been cleared, and the corporate assets are being frozen and returned to the family estate."
